Causation, conception and color by John Morrison( )

1 edition published in 2009 in English and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This dissertation consists of three essays. The first two essays are about Spinoza's fourth axiom, which says that cognition of an effect depends on, and involves, cognition of its cause. The first essay argues that this axiom is restricted to immanent causation. The second essay argues that this axiom does not entail that if one thing is conceived through another then second thing is a cause of the first thing. The third essay develops a new problem for conciliatory thinking about color, which is the view that the colors both satisfy the structure of our experiences and depend on the properties of physics
The Sharp Contour of Consciousness by Jonathan Aaron Simon( )

1 edition published in 2012 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Consciousness is a sharp contour in the world. It is sharp - there is no such thing as an indeterminate case of consciousness. And it is a contour - there is an ontologically significant contrast between anything that is conscious and anything that is not. But the material world is a gradual place. With a powerful enough microscope, everything looks cloudy, and there are only sharp contours in nature very rarely - some at the quantum level, some dealing with thresholds of fundamental phenomena like gravity. Most things that appear to be sharp and distinguished changes (like the firing of a neuron, or the splitting of an embryonic cell) are actually quite gradual on a fine enough scale
