Asylums; essays on the social situation of mental patients and other inmates by Erving Goffman( Book )
220 editions published between 1961 and 2011 in 11 languages and held by 3,507 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The author defines a "total institution" as a place of residence and work where a large number of like-situated, individuals, cut off from the wider society for an appreciable period of time, together lead an enclosed, formally administered round of life. Prisons serve as a clear example, providing we appreciate that what is prison-like about prisons is found in institutions whose members have broken no laws. This volume deals with total institutions in general and, mental hospitals, in particular. The main focus is, on the world of the inmate, not the world of the staff. A chief concern is to develop a sociological version of the structure of the self. Each of the essays in this book were intended to focus on the same issue--the inmate's situation in an institutional context
The presentation of self in everyday life by Erving Goffman( Book )
172 editions published between 1956 and 2011 in 9 languages and held by 3,465 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The key work of one of the most influential sociologists of the twentieth century. Erving Goffman deals with human interaction in social situations using the metaphor of the stage. Role-playing is now recognized as not merely the province of the performer and the maladjusted neurotic, but as an integral and necessary function of daily living. Social techniques of self-presentation are illuminated by examples taken from detailed research and observation of social customs in many regions and a variety of occupational levels. One of the most interesting aspects of this study is its revelation of the many roles that must be assumed by everyone engaged in even the simplest life-situations. In the course of any day one may easily play a half-dozen parts: with the boss, with fellow-workers, with friends, with one's spouse, and so on. Dr. Goffman's analogy details how "acting" techniques are used in the most common everyday circumstances; it bares the mainsprings of manipulation that keep society moving.--From publisher description
Stigma; notes on the management of spoiled identity by Erving Goffman( Book )
212 editions published between 1963 and 2014 in 15 languages and held by 3,335 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
An "excursion into the situation of persons who are unable to conform to standards that society calls normal," including "physically deformed people, ex-mental patients, drug addicts, prostitutes, or those ostracized for other reasons."
Interaction ritual; essays on face-to-face behavior by Erving Goffman( Book )
158 editions published between 1967 and 2013 in 8 languages and held by 2,835 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Not then, men and their moments. Rather, moments and their men," writes [the author] in the introduction to his [book], a study of face-to-face interaction in natural settings, that class of events that occurs during co-presence and by virtue of co-presence. The ultimate behavioral materials are the glances, gestures, positioning, and verbal statements that people continuously feed into situations, whether intended or not. A sociology of occasions is here advocated. Social organizations is the central theme, but what is organized is the commingling of persons and the temporary interactional enterprises that can arise there from. A normatively stabilized structure is at issue, a "social gathering," but this is a shifting entity, necessarily evanescent, created by arrivals and killed by departures. The major section of the book is the essay "Where the Actions Is," drawing on [the author's] last major ethnographic project, his observation of Nevada casinos.-Back cover
Frame analysis : an essay on the organization of experience by Erving Goffman( Book )
93 editions published between 1972 and 2010 in 4 languages and held by 2,148 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Behavior in public places; notes on the social organization of gatherings by Erving Goffman( Book )
89 editions published between 1903 and 2014 in 7 languages and held by 1,997 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The purpose of this book is to develop a framework capable of dealing with an almost neglected area of social reality, behavior in public and semipublic places. [The author] feels that the distinct features of face-to-face interaction, richness of information flow, and facilitation of feedback, have enough structuring significance to provide an analytical rationale for its separate treatment. It is to his credit that this 'model' takes advantage of already existing and well-defined terminology, while introducing only a few new and relatively unfamiliar concepts
Relations in public; microstudies of the public order by Erving Goffman( Book )
100 editions published between 1971 and 2011 in 7 languages and held by 1,980 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Until recently, to be in a "public place" meant to feel safe. That has changed, especially in cities. Urban dwellers sense the need to quickly react to gestural cues from persons in their immediate presence in order to establish their relationship to each other. Through this communication they hope to detect potential danger before it is too late for self-defense or flight. The ability to read accurately the "informing signs" by which strangers indicate their relationship to one another in public or semi-public places without speaking, has become as important as understanding the official written and spoken language of the country

Strategic interaction by Erving Goffman( Book )
45 editions published between 1968 and 2009 in 3 languages and held by 1,356 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

L'arrangement des sexes by Erving Goffman( Book )
6 editions published between 2002 and 2009 in French and held by 151 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
