The presentation of self in everyday life by Erving Goffman( Book )

304 editions published between 1956 and 2014 in 17 languages and held by 4,331 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The key work of one of the most influential sociologists of the twentieth century. Erving Goffman deals with human interaction in social situations using the metaphor of the stage. Role-playing is now recognized as not merely the province of the performer and the maladjusted neurotic, but as an integral and necessary function of daily living. Social techniques of self-presentation are illuminated by examples taken from detailed research and observation of social customs in many regions and a variety of occupational levels. One of the most interesting aspects of this study is its revelation of the many roles that must be assumed by everyone engaged in even the simplest life-situations. In the course of any day one may easily play a half-dozen parts: with the boss, with fellow-workers, with friends, with one's spouse, and so on. Dr. Goffman's analogy details how "acting" techniques are used in the most common everyday circumstances; it bares the mainsprings of manipulation that keep society moving.--From publisher description
Asylums; essays on the social situation of mental patients and other inmates by Erving Goffman( Book )

229 editions published between 1961 and 2014 in 11 languages and held by 3,475 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The author defines a "total institution" as a place of residence and work where a large number of like-situated, individuals, cut off from the wider society for an appreciable period of time, together lead an enclosed, formally administered round of life. Prisons serve as a clear example, providing we appreciate that what is prison-like about prisons is found in institutions whose members have broken no laws. This volume deals with total institutions in general and, mental hospitals, in particular. The main focus is, on the world of the inmate, not the world of the staff. A chief concern is to develop a sociological version of the structure of the self. Each of the essays in this book were intended to focus on the same issue--the inmate's situation in an institutional context
Stigma; notes on the management of spoiled identity by Erving Goffman( Book )

201 editions published between 1963 and 2014 in 13 languages and held by 3,279 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An "excursion into the situation of persons who are unable to conform to standards that society calls normal," including "physically deformed people, ex-mental patients, drug addicts, prostitutes, or those ostracized for other reasons."
Interaction ritual; essays on face-to-face behavior by Erving Goffman( Book )

159 editions published between 1967 and 2013 in 8 languages and held by 2,840 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Not then, men and their moments. Rather, moments and their men," writes [the author] in the introduction to his [book], a study of face-to-face interaction in natural settings, that class of events that occurs during co-presence and by virtue of co-presence. The ultimate behavioral materials are the glances, gestures, positioning, and verbal statements that people continuously feed into situations, whether intended or not. A sociology of occasions is here advocated. Social organizations is the central theme, but what is organized is the commingling of persons and the temporary interactional enterprises that can arise there from. A normatively stabilized structure is at issue, a "social gathering," but this is a shifting entity, necessarily evanescent, created by arrivals and killed by departures. The major section of the book is the essay "Where the Actions Is," drawing on [the author's] last major ethnographic project, his observation of Nevada casinos.-Back cover

Behavior in public places; notes on the social organization of gatherings by Erving Goffman( Book )

91 editions published between 1903 and 2014 in 6 languages and held by 1,960 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The purpose of this book is to develop a framework capable of dealing with an almost neglected area of social reality, behavior in public and semipublic places. [The author] feels that the distinct features of face-to-face interaction, richness of information flow, and facilitation of feedback, have enough structuring significance to provide an analytical rationale for its separate treatment. It is to his credit that this 'model' takes advantage of already existing and well-defined terminology, while introducing only a few new and relatively unfamiliar concepts

Forms of talk by Erving Goffman( Book )

63 editions published between 1981 and 2008 in 4 languages and held by 1,640 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Forms of Talk extends Erving Goffman's interactional analyses of face-to-face communication to ordinary conversations and vebal exchanges. In this, his most sociolinguistic work, Goffman relates to certain forms of talk some of the issues that concerned him in his work on frame analysis. This book brings together five of Goffman's essays: "Replies and Responses," "Response Cries," "Footing," "The Lecture," and "Radio Talk." Of lasting value in Goffman's work is his insistence that behavior - verbal or nonverbal - be examined along with the context of that behavior. In all of these classic essays, there is a "topic" at hand for discussion and analysis. In addition, as those familiar with Goffman's work have come to expect, there is the wider context in which the topic can be viewed and related to other topics - a characteristic move of Goffman's that has made his work so necessary for students of interaction in many disciplines. -- Back cover

Strategic interaction by Erving Goffman( Book )

49 editions published between 1968 and 2009 in 3 languages and held by 1,345 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

L'arrangement des sexes by Erving Goffman( Book )

6 editions published between 2002 and 2009 in French and held by 154 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

La nouvelle communication by Gregory Bateson( Book )

3 editions published between 1981 and 2014 in French and held by 118 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Gregory Bateson. Erving Goffman. Edward T. Hall. Paul Watzlawick.

Rede-Weisen : Formen der Kommunikation in sozialen Situationen by Erving Goffman( Book )

4 editions published in 2005 in German and held by 74 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
