Prefacing the lesson units are introductory notes on the arabic language and the structural and cultural content, a list of symbols and abbreviations, a phonological chart, and a diagram of the speech organs. Appended are supplementary passages for comprehension and reading practice, grammatical notes and index, and an English-arabic glossary indicating both formal and colloquial forms. Related text ED 011 110, "writing arabic," and pre-recorded tapes are intended for use with this text. The educated dialect of cairo was selected as being the most representative, socially acceptable, and understandable throughout the arab countries. (am)
