It is just before New Year's. Frank, an overweight American tourist, has hired Kenji to take him on a guided tour of Tokyo's sleazy nightlife on three successive evenings. But Frank's behavior is so strange that Kenji begins to entertain a horrible suspicion: that his new client is in fact the serial killer currently terrorizing the city. It isn't until the second night, however, in a scene that will shock you and make you laugh and make you hate yourself for laughing, that Kenji learns exactly how much he has to fear and how irrevocably his encounter with this great white whale of an American will change his life. Kenji's intimate knowledge of Tokyo's sex industry, his thoughtful observations and wisecracks about the emptiness and hypocrisy of contemporary Japan, and his insights into the shockingly widespread phenomena of "compensated dating" and selling it among Japanese schoolgirls, give us plenty to think about on every page. Kenji is our likable, if far from innocent, guide to the inferno of violence and evil into which he unwillingly descends - and from which only Jun, his sixteen-year-old, can possibly save him

From the fatherland, with love by Ryū Murakami( Book )

From the Fatherland, with Love is set in an alternative, dystopian present in which the dollar has collapsed and Japan's economy has fallen along with it. The North Korean government, sensing an opportunity, sends a fleet of rebels in the first land invasion that Japan has ever faced. Japan can't cope with the surprise onslaught of Operation From the Fatherland, with Love. But the terrorist Ishihara and his band of renegade youths--once dedicated to upsetting the Japanese government--turn their deadly attention to the North Korean threat. They will not allow Fukuoka to fall without a fight. Epic in scale, From the Fatherland, with Love is laced throughout with Murakami's characteristically savage violence. It's both a satisfying thriller and a completely mad, over-the-top novel like few others

Saigo no kazoku by Ryū Murakami( Book )

9 editions published between 2001 and 2013 in 3 languages and held by 66 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Murakami Ryu has a great novel titled The Last Family (Saigo no kazoku) in which he parodies bubble/post bubble human interest stories. The family presented has every possible ill discussed in the papers. The father is made redundant but continues to leave the house everyday because he cannot bring himself to tell the family that he has been fired. The mother is having an affair with the carpenter. The daughter is engaged in subsidized dating. And the son, as a matter of course, is hikkikomori. What is brilliant about the novel is the way Murakami does damage to the popular media stereotypes of these caricatures. The father ends up being better off for losing his job; he opens the restaurant of which he had always dreamed. The daughter is not really a prostitute, though she accepts money for a date. And the son ends up saving the neighbor, because he is always looking out from his box. He knows what is going on around him to an extent that others who are out and about in the world do not
