"Let Truth Be The Prejudice documents the life and work of W. Eugene Smith, a man whose work expanded the range and depth of photography, bringing new aesthetic and moral power to the photo essay. Smith was born in 1918 in Wichita, Kansas, and raised according to traditional American values, believing in the nobility of America and the injustice of war. He began taking pictures with his mother's camera while still a boy and continued this practice throughout his schooling. In 1937 his burning ambition took him to New York City, where his rise as a professional photographer was meteoric."--Amazon

A Sunday between wars : the course of American life from 1865 to 1917 by Ben Maddow( Book )

5 editions published in 1979 in English and Undetermined and held by 735 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The half century between the end of the Civil War and the Declaration of War in 1917 was quiet only in the general misconception. From the ordinary nineteenth-century American's point of view, it was extraordinarily bloody. There were military expeditions against Indian tribes and against Cuba and the Philippines. There was the general strike of 1877, the cruel failure of the unions, and the ides of immigration and their furious personal energy. There was the repeated quest for the Grail of materialism--gold and silver hidden in rock. This book examines, over all, and with some awe, the building of the great pyramid of American industrialization and measures its even more immense--and almost forgotten--human cost. Because it is written from the vantage point of those below, of those new to America and still poor, much of the text is taken from diaries, letters, and contemporary accounts by authors who will forever be unknown

Intruder in the dust by Prod Co: Metro Goldwyn Mayer( Visual )

12 editions published between 1949 and 2016 in English and held by 265 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This adaptation of Faulkner's novel was filmed in Oxford, Mississippi, the novelist's home town. Although not entirely free of stereotyping this is by far the most subtle of the postwar liberal cycle of films from Hollywood dealing with race prejudice (see Crossfire, Gentleman's Agreement and The Well). The lone black figure of Lucas Beauchamp is portrayed by Hernandez without a hint of condescension. Proud and aloof, he brings forth white resentment for not "playing like a nigger". When he is accused of murdering a white he haughtily refuses to defend himself and a lynch mob threatens. The film gains strength by not portraying the crowd simply as an angry mob but as a group of townspeople able to implicate a white audience by their very ordinariness

13 editions published between 1963 and 2008 in English and held by 134 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Directed by the award-winning Joseph Strick and based on acclaimed French avant-garde dramatist Jean Genet's play, this star-packed film features Shelley Winters as the brothel's madam and Peter Falk as her occasional lover, who enlists her help in halting the revolution. A young Leonard Nimoy heads the rebels, and Lee Grant is the madam's executive assistant who longs to return to her former role as just "one of the girls". With its insightfulness and delightfully fresh sense of humor, The Balcony continues to provide a great view of the world's ironies
