Lunar Outpost provides a detailed account of the various technologies, mission architectures, medical requirements and training needed to return humans to the Moon within the next decade. It focuses on the means by which a lunar outpost will be constructed and also addresses major topics such as the cost of the enterprise and the roles played by private companies and individual countries. The return of humans to the surface of the Moon will be critical to the exploration of the solar system. The various missions are not only in pursuit of scientific knowledge, but also looking to extend human civilization, economic expansion, and public engagement beyond Earth. As well as NASA, China's Project 921, Japan's Aerospace Exploration Agency, Russia, and the European Space Agency are all planning manned missions to the Moon and, eventually, to Mars. The AresI and AresV are the biggest rockets since the Saturn V and there is much stateoftheart technology incorporated into the design of Orion, the spacecraft that will carry a crew of four astronauts to the Moon. Lunar Outpost also describes the human factors, communications, exploration activities, and life support constraints of the missions. Publisher

Bifurcations and catastrophes : geometry of solutions to nonlinear problems by
Michel Demazure(
Book
)
23 editions published between 1981 and 2000 in 3 languages and held by 310 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Based on a lecture course at the Ecole Polytechnique (Paris), this text gives a rigorous introduction to many of the key ideas in nonlinear analysis, dynamical systems and bifurcation theory including catastrophe theory. Wherever appropriate it emphasizes a geometrical or coordinatefree approach which allows a clear focus on the essential mathematical structures. Taking a unified view, it brings out features common to different branches of the subject while giving ample references for more advanced or technical developments."Jacket

A tour of the calculus by
David Berlinski(
Book
)
1 edition published in 2001 in French and held by 46 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The calculus represents humanity's great and profound meditation on the theme of continuity. Time and space are given voice, and speed and area are subordinated to the harsh concept of a limit. The introduction of the real numbers allows the landscape of mathematical analysis to be suffused with thrilling light. In that litup landscape, the infinite is for the first time charmed into compliance, men and women gaining the eerie power to ask of certain processes, Suppose it goes on forever, what then? and finding within the calculus a comprehensive answer. In clear and instructive language David Berlinski explains the concept of limits, how a function describes a relationship between numbers, and the meaning of the real numbers and their role in the recreation of the world. Hidden for centuries from human insight, an array of mathematical operations and processes become visible
