6 editions published between 1994 and 2004 in English and Undetermined and held by 257 libraries worldwide
In Debating Durkheim, leading international scholars are brought together to discuss controversial issues in the work of this increasingly important founding father of sociology. The subjects covered relate to Durkheim's Jewish background and its influence on his life and thought; a positive reinterpretation of Durkheim's study of primitive thought in terms of social classification; an attempt to shed new light on his book on methodology, The Rules, which has been much criticized; a philosophical and sympathetic analysis of the notion of the social; a discussion of Durkheim's sociology of morals based on a study of social facts; a careful consideration of the problems of Durkheim's references to state, nation and patriotism; and finally, an application of The Rules to data relating to first names and raising the issue of social imitation. The appendix is an extension of the first chapter and covers new translations and hitherto unpublished material by Durkheim on the issues of Jewishness and anti-semitism. As these essays will show, Durkheim raises basic issues which must be examined if contemporary society is to be understood.

The volume contains a new translation of important sections of The Elementary Forms of Religious Life (1912), of some of Durkheim's early reviews, articles, and extracts from books, presented in order of original publication. Also included are comprehensive bibliographies, and early reviews of Durkheim's work on religion by such writers as van Gennep, Goldenwieser, Stanner, and, for the first time in English, by the French sociologist Gaston Richard."--BOOK JACKET.
Suffering and evil : the Durkheimian legacy : essays in commemoration of the 90th anniversary of Durkheim's death ( Book )
2 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 160 libraries worldwide
Until recently the subject of suffering and evil was neglected in the sociological world and is almost absent in Durkheimian studies as well. This book aims to fill the gap, with particular reference to the Durkheimian tradition, by exploring the different meanings that the concepts of evil and suffering have in Durkheim's works, together with the general role they play in his sociology. It then examines the meanings and roles of these concepts in relation to suffering and evil in other authors within the group of the Année sociologique up until the beginning of World II. Finally, the Durkheimian legacy in its wider aspects is assessed, with particular reference to the importance of the Durkheimian categories in understanding and in conceptualizing contemporary forms of evil and suffering.
