Theory of complex functions by Reinhold Remmert( Book )

172 editions published between 1968 and 2011 in 4 languages and held by 1,908 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book is an ideal text for an advanced course in the theory of complex functions. The author leads the reader to experience function theory personally and to participate in the work of the creative mathematician. The book contains numerous glimpses of the function theory of several complex variables, which illustrate how autonomous this discipline has become. Topics covered include Weierstrass's product theorem, Mittag-Leffler's theorem, the Riemann mapping theorem, and Runge's theorems on approximation of analytic functions. In addition to these standard topics, the reader will find Eisenstein's proof of Euler's product formula for the sine function; Wielandt's uniqueness theorem for the gamma function and applications; a detailed discussion of Stirling's formula; Iss'sa's theorem; Besse's proof that all domains in C are domains of holomorphy; Wedderburn's lemma and the ideal theory of rings of holomorphic functions; Estermann's proofs of the overconvergence theorem and Bloch's theorem; a holomorphic imbedding of the unit disc in C[superscript 3]; and Gauss's expert opinion of November 1851 on Riemann's dissertation." "Remmert presents the material in short clear sections, with compact proofs and historical comments interwoven throughout the text. The abundance of examples, exercises, and historical remarks, as well as the extensive bibliography, will make this book an invaluable source for students and teachers."--Jacket
Theory of Stein spaces by Hans Grauert( Book )

47 editions published between 1977 and 2004 in 4 languages and held by 868 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From the reviews: "Theory of Stein Spaces provides a rich variety of methods, results, and motivations - a book with masterful mathematical care and judgement. It is a pleasure to have this fundamental material now readily accessible to any serious mathematician." J. Eells in Bulletin of the London Mathematical Society (1980) "Written by two mathematicians who played a crucial role in the development of the modern theory of several complex variables, this is an important book." J.B. Cooper in Internationale Mathematische Nachrichten (1979)
Coherent analytic sheaves by Hans Grauert( Book )

. . . Werke II, p. 235). 1. Sheaf Theory is a general tool for handling questions which involve local solutions and global patching. "La notion de faisceau s'introduit parce qu'il s'agit de passer de donnees 'locales' a l'etude de proprietes 'globales'" [CAR], p. 622. The methods of sheaf theory are algebraic. The notion of a sheaf was first introduced in 1946 by J. LERAY in a short note Eanneau d'homologie d'une representation, C. R. Acad. Sci. 222, 1366-68. Of course sheaves had occurred implicitly much earlier in mathematics. The "Monogene analytische Functionen", which K. WEIERSTRASS glued together from "Func tionselemente durch analytische Fortsetzung", are simply the connected components of the sheaf of germs of holomorphic functions on a RIEMANN surface*'; and the "ideaux de domaines indetermines", basic in the work of K. OKA since 1948 (cf. [OKA], p. 84, 107), are just sheaves of ideals of germs of holomorphic functions. Highly original contributions to mathematics are usually not appreciated at first. Fortunately H. CARTAN immediately realized the great importance of LERAY'S new abstract concept of a sheaf. In the polycopied notes of his Semina ire at the E. N. S

Mathematics has a certain mystique, for it is pure and ex- act, yet demands remarkable creativity. This reputation is reinforced by its characteristic abstraction and its own in- dividual language, which often disguise its origins in and connections with the physical world. Publishing mathematics, therefore, requires special effort and talent. Heinz Gotze, who has dedicated his life to scientific pu- blishing, took up this challenge with his typical enthusi- asm. This Festschrift celebrates his invaluable contribu- tions to the mathematical community, many of whose leading members he counts among his personal friends. The articles, written by mathematicians from around the world and coming from diverse fields, portray the important role of mathematics in our culture. Here, the reflections of important mathematicians, often focused on the history of mathematics, are collected, in recognition of Heinz Gotze's life-long support of mathematics

Duration and change : fifty years at Oberwolfach by Michael Artin( Book )

12 editions published in 1994 in English and German and held by 170 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A volume containing original essays from quite diverse fields in mathematics is something of a rarity, especially if renowned scientists show the width of their discipline to the reader. This book is just such a rarity - a veritable gem. It was written to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the mathematical research institute at Oberwolfach. The articles span a range of topics from general reflections on the place of mathematics in contemporary culture to essays dealing with aspects of algebra, analysis, geometry, coding theory, scientific computing and topology. All essays are interrelated, proving the old rule that you can divide and still conquer. A book in which every mathematician or scientist interested in mathematics will find something to take their fancy

Numbers by Heinz-Dieter Ebbinghaus( )

8 editions published between 1983 and 1992 in German and English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is a book about numbers - all kinds of numbers, from integers to p-adics, from rationals to octonions, from reals to infinitesimals. Who first used the standard notation for Â? Why was Hamilton obsessed with quaternions? What was the prospect for "quaternionic analysis" in the 19th century? This is the story about one of the major threads of mathematics over thousands of years. It is a story that will give the reader both a glimpse of the mystery surrounding imaginary numbers in the 17th century and also a view of some major developments in the 20th

Several Complex Variables VII Sheaf-Theoretical Methods in Complex Analysis by Hans Grauert( )

1 edition published in 1994 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume of the Encyclopaedia offers a systematic introduction and a comprehensive survey of the theory of complex spaces. It covers topics like semi-normal complex spaces, cohomology, the Levi problem, q-convexity and q-concavity. It is the first survey of this kind. The authors are internationally known outstanding experts who developed substantial parts of the field. The book contains seven chapters and an introduction written by Remmert, describing the history of the subject. The book will be very useful to graduate students and researchers in complex analysis, algebraic geometry and differential geometry. Another group of readers will consist of mathematical physicists who apply results from these fields
