"Published shortly after his death in 1677, Ethics is undoubtedly Spinoza?s greatest work: a fully cohesive philosophical system that strives to provide a coherent picture of reality and to comprehend the meaning of an ethical life. Following a logical step-by-step format, it defines in turn the nature of God, the mind, human bondage to the emotions, and the power of understanding, moving from a consideration of the eternal to speculate upon humanity's place in the natural order, freedom, and the path to attainable happiness. A powerful work of elegant simplicity, Ethics is a brilliantly insightful consideration of the possibility of redemption through intense thought and philosophical reflection."--P. [4] of cover.

Among the various epithets that greeted the publication of Spinoza's Theological-Political Treatise (henceforth the TTP) in 1670 were "harmful and vile," "most pernicious," "intolerably unrestrained," "subversive," "blasphemous," "diabolical," and "Atheistic." [This text] to the treatise makes it quite clear that the TTP is a polemical, political, indeed personal book, despite the paucity of references to either contemporary events or his own life. Spoinoza is quite explicit that this is no abstract ivory-tower treatise in philosophy, as his more famous work the "Ethics" has seemed to its superficial readers. The TTP is openly a political and theological tract aimed at solving several specific practical issues facing contemporary Dutch society, in whose midst Spinora had been born and in which he lived all his life, never leaving its borders, even for a vacation or visit. It also contains a response to an important event, indeed a turning point, in Spinoza's own life, his excommunication from the Jewish community of Amsterdam in 1656.-Introd.

"It is the purpose of this volume to set forth the philosophical system of Spinoza in the philosopher's own words, and not merely to prepare a book of disconnected extracts from his writings, I have followed a plan which may seem somewhat unusual in works of this kind. The philosophy of Spinoza is contained in its final form in the "Ethics." By translating in full the first, second, and fifth parts of the "Ethics," giving the author's prefaces to, and summaries of, the third and fourth parts, and supplying in foot-notes passages in the omitted portions to which reference is made, I have found it possible to give a just idea of the doctrine contained in the "Ethics," while reducing the work by about one-half, and bringing it within the limits demanded by this Series. That it is not easy to cut into a work constructed as is this one, anyone may readily satisfy himself by examination. I think, however, I have omitted nothing essential to a comprehension of Spinoza's metaphysical system, and have preserved intact his chain of argument. This second edition is so different from the first that it may almost be regarded as a new book. The general plan is retained, but the translation has been freely altered throughout, and in Part III propositions I to II have been added. Some of the introductory matter is new, and the critical and explanatory notes have been greatly multiplied. I have discussed at length in a prefatory note the nature of Spinoza's reasoning and the foundations upon which it rests; and I beg the reader to examine this carefully before proceeding to a study of the text"--Preface. This anthology of the work of Baruch de Spinoza (1632-1677) presents the text of Spinoza's masterwork, the Ethics, in what is now the standard translation by Edwin Curley. Also included are selections from other works by Spinoza, chosen by Curley to make the Ethics easier to understand, and a substantial introduction that gives an overview of Spinoza's life and the main themes of his philosophy. Perfect for course use, the Spinoza Reader is a practical tool with which to approach one of the world's greatest but most difficult thinkers, a passionate seeker of the truth who has been viewed by some as an atheist and by others as a religious mystic. The anthology begins with the opening section of the Treatise on the Emendation of the Intellect, which has always moved readers by its description of the young Spinoza's spiritual quest, his dissatisfaction with the things people ordinarily strive for--wealth, honor, and sensual pleasure--and his hope that the pursuit of knowledge would lead him to discover the true good. The emphasis throughout these selections is on metaphysical, epistemological, and religious issues: the existence and nature of God, his relation to the world, the nature of the human mind and its relation to the body, and the theory of demonstration, axioms, and definitions. For each of these topics, the editor supplements the rigorous discussions in the Ethics with informal treatments from Spinoza's other works.
