Chekhov is most often associated with serious, melancholy, intense and realistic short fiction, but he had a humorous side too. His writing career actually began with humorous fiction. In order to support himself and his family during medical school, Chekhov began writing and selling stories. It was easier for an unknown writer to sell farcical, lighthearted stories than serious fiction, so that is what Chekhov decided to focus on. His humorous stories are not held in the same regard as his other work, but they are an important piece of his bibliography nonetheless. Nine of his comic short stories are collected here
