SUMMARY. A series of short files or single letters principally between Juliana Force, director, and artists showing or wishing to show with the Whitney Studio Galleries, 1928-30. Letters are concerned with exhibitions, work in progress, prices and sales of works of art, and purchases for the private collections of Mrs. Force and Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney and are especially useful on the Woodstock group and on American artists in Paris. Much of the detail relates to the Annuals, two group shows - "Flower Paintings" (1930) and "Animal Sculpture" (never held?) - and the arrangements and selections for one man and small-group shows. Notable among the latter are letters with Gerard Cochet, Jacques Loutchansky (who includes an autobiographical statement), Cecil de B. Howard, Henri Burckhard, Charles Rosen, John Steuart Curry, J. Ward Lockwood, Paul Rohland, and Arnold Blanch. Among other letters of special interest are one from Clement Wilenchik commenting on the demise of the Studio Club in 1928; letters of Emil Ganso and Ernest Fiene on Ganso's divorce; comments on art theory and aesthetics by Harry Flatow; and autobiographical accounts of two minor figures (Myron Lechay and John N. Haapanen). (f.1-4; microfilm roll #592)
