His glassy essence : an autobiography of Charles Sanders Peirce by Kenneth Laine Ketner( Book )

6 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 405 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914), the most important and influential of the classical American philosophers, is credited as the inventor of the philosophical school of pragmatism. The scope and significance of his work have had a lasting effect not only in several fields of philosophy but also in mathematics, the history and philosophy of science, and the theory of signs, as well as in literary and cultural studies." "Inspired by his friendship and correspondence with the novelist Walker Percy, who himself was absorbed by the life and writings of Peirce, Ketner adopts a narrative strategy that lets Peirce tell his own early life story. He weaves the voluminous components of an intellectual biography that are scattered throughout Peirce's published and unpublished writings into a novelistic account that reads like a mystery." "Ketner offers satisfying explanations and convincing hypotheses for a number of intimate and controversial aspects of Peirce's eventful yet frustrated life, including his inability to find a permanent teaching position at any university, the ancestry of Peirce's wife Juliette and the source of his family's hostility toward her, and the previously unknown fact that Peirce actually had three wives instead of two."--Jacket
Charles S. Peirce: the essential writings by Charles S Peirce( Book )

12 editions published between 1972 and 1998 in English and held by 366 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Physicist, mathematician, and logician Charles S. Peirce (1839-1914) was America's first internationally recognized philosopher, the man who created the concept of "pragmatism," later popularized by William James. Charles S. Peirce: The Essential Writings is a comprehensive collection of the philosopher's writings, including: "Questions Concerning Certain Faculties Claimed for Man" (1868), which outlines his theory of knowledge; a review of the works of George Berkeley; papers from between 1877 and 1905 developing the ground of pragmatism and Peirce's theory of scientific inquiry; his basic concept of metaphysics (1891-93); and the important 1902 articles in Baldwin's dictionary on his later pragmatism (or pragmaticism), uniformity, and synechism. Included are Peirce's well-known essays: "The Fixation of Belief" and "How to Make Our Ideas Clear." Book jacket."--Jacket
Pragmatism as a principle and method of right thinking : the 1903 Harvard lectures on pragmatism by Charles S Peirce( Book )

10 editions published between 1996 and 1997 in English and Spanish and held by 365 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is a study edition of Charles Sanders Peirce's manuscripts for lectures on pragmatism given in spring 1903 at Harvard University. Excerpts from these writings have been published elsewhere but in abbreviated form. Turrisi has edited the manuscripts for publication and has written a series of notes that illuminate the historical, scientific, and philosophical contexts of Peirce's references in the lectures. She has also written a Preface that describes the manner in which the lectures came to be given, including an account of Peirce's life and career pertinent to understanding the philosopher himself. Turrisi's introduction interprets Peirce's brand of pragmatism within his system of logic and philosophy of science as well as within general philosophical principles

Philosophy of mathematics : selected writings by Charles S Peirce( Book )

15 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 177 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The philosophy of mathematics plays a vital role in the mature philosophy of Charles S. Peirce. Peirce received rigorous mathematical training from his father and his philosophy carries on in decidedly mathematical and symbolic veins. For Peirce, math was a philosophical tool and many of his most productive ideas rest firmly on the foundation of mathematical principles. This volume collects Peirce's most important writings on the subject, many appearing in print for the first time. Peirce's determination
Illustrations of the logic of science by Charles S Peirce( Book )

7 editions published between 1877 and 2014 in English and held by 104 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Charles Peirce's 'Illustrations of the logic of science' is an early work in the philosophy of science and the official birthplace of pragmatism. It contains Peirce's two most influential papers: "The Fixation of Belief" and "How to Make Our Ideas Clear, " as well as discussions on the theory of probability, the ground of induction, the relation between science and religion, and the logic of abduction. Unsatisfied with the result and driven by a constant, almost feverish urge to improve his work, Peirce spent considerable time and effort revising these papers. After the turn of the century these efforts gained significant momentum when Peirce sought to establish his role in the development of pragmatism while distancing himself from the more popular versions that had become current. The present edition brings together the original series as it appeared in Popular Science Monthly and a selection of Peirce's later revisions, many of which remained hidden in the mass of messy manuscripts that were left behind after his death in 1914.--

The iconic logic of Peirce's graphs by Sun-Joo Shin( Book )

1 edition published in 2002 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Shin analyzes Peirce's well-known, but much-criticized nonsymbolic representation system. She presents a new approach to his graphical system based on her discovery of its unique nature and on a reconstruction of Peirce's theory of representation. By seeking to understand graphical systems in their own terms, she uncovers the reasons why graphical systems, and Existential Graphs in particular, have been underappreciated by logicians. Drawing on perspectives from the philosophy of mind, cognitive science, logic, and computer science, Shin points the way toward a genuinely interdisciplinary project on multimodal reasoning."--Cover
Writings of Charles S A Chronological Edition by Charles S Peirce( Book )

4 editions published between 1986 and 2009 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Volume 8 of this landmark edition follows Peirce from May 1890 through July 1892-a period of turmoil as his career unraveled at the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. The loss of his principal source of income meant the beginning of permanent penury and a lifelong struggle to find gainful employment. His key achievement during these years is his celebrated Monist metaphysical project, which consists of five classic articles on evolutionary cosmology. Also included are reviews and essays from The Nation in which Peirce critiques Paul Carus, William James, Auguste Comte, Cesare Lombroso, and Kar
