Charles de</creator><title>The enemy's house divided</title><summary>&quot;The Enemy's House Divided is de Gaulle's analysis of the major errors that led the Germans to disaster in World War I. Based partly on observations made during his internment as a prisoner of war from 1916 to 1918, it can be seen as the foundation for everything he wrote in the 1920s and 1930s in the shadow of German resurgence and for much of what he said and did after the Nazi victory in June 1940.&quot; &quot; To de Gaulle, the German conduct of the Great War and the debacle of 1918 was the greatest moral disaster ever to befall a modern civilized political community. He seeks to identify the internecine causes of the collapse of the German war effort in 1918 and of the subsequent dissolution of the German Empire. His diagnosis of the profound moral crisis that unfolded in Germany during World War I points forward to 1940, for de Gaulle understood the fall of France, above all, as a moral catastrophe for the French. His first book, it is also a key document of de Gaulle's &quot;philosophy of action,&quot; introducing his statesmanship to the world with its deliberate and studied critique of the perils of Nietzsche's philosophical initiative.&quot;--BOOK JACKET.</summary><cover isbn="0807826669" oclc="ocn049582533" It was no idle boast. Following France's rapid capitulation to Nazi forces, de Gaulle alone stood for a France undefeated and still fighting. Through sheer force of will, he made himself heard, rescuing French dignity and insuring that at the end of World War II France would be among the victorious armies, her status as a world power recognized. It was an immense achievement, one that only a man of de Gaulle's raw nerve, stubbornness, arrogance, and messianic conviction could have accomplished. Though he had virtually no resources and commanded only a few thousand men, he insisted that Britain and America treat France as an equal. His relationship with Churchill was stormy in the extreme but based on a strong mutual admiration; with Roosevelt his relationship was icy. Nonetheless he achieved his goal: France took her place among the Big Five nations in the postwar world. The man who had been sentenced to death as a traitor by the Vichy government returned to France in 1944 a hero and a legend, soon to be elected president. In 1946 de Gaulle shocked the world by resigning. When he stepped back into the political arena twelve years later, it was to once again save a France in crisis. With the adroit maneuvering of a political mastermind he extricated France from Algeria and pulled the country back from the brink of civil war. He barely escaped with his life, surviving numerous assassination attempts by French-Algerians angered by his apparent betrayal. De Gaulle's second presidency lasted ten years until 1968, when student-led revolts toppled his government, but his extraordinary legacy endured in France's most effective constitution since the Revolution, and in international prestige that would have been unthinkable in the previous decade. Charles de Gaulle died in November 1970, a few days before his eightieth birthday. He was a product of northern French provincial society of the nineteenth century - austere, Catholic, and nationalist - truly the &quot;last great Frenchman.&quot; In this fully rounded portrait of one of the twentieth century's most outstanding statesmen, Charles Williams interprets the facts and the motive of his subject with the insights of the distinguished politician he is himself.</summary><cover isbn="0471117110" oclc="ocn031514512" type="isbn">+-+5662666295</cover></citation><citation><uniqueHoldings>1142</uniqueHoldings><holdings>1297</holdings><numEditions>16</numEditions><oclcnum>ocn000401139</oclcnum><exprid>sw000401139:lccn-n79-41762</exprid><isFiction>False</isFiction><recordType>book</recordType><date>1966</date><languages count="5"><lang code="eng" count="7"/><lang code="fre" count="5"/><lang code="ger" count="2"/><lang code="spa" count="1"/><lang code="ita" count="1"/></languages><dates different="4" first="1964" last="1985"/><audLevel>0.62</audLevel><creator>Mauriac, Franc&#x327;ois</creator><title>De Gaulle</title></citation><citation><uniqueHoldings>1038</uniqueHoldings><holdings>1038</holdings><numEditions>4</numEditions><oclcnum>ocn000401095</oclcnum><exprid>sw000401095:lccn-n79-41762</exprid><isFiction>False</isFiction><recordType>book</recordType><date>1964</date><languages count="1"><lang code="eng" count="4"/></languages><dates different="1" first="1964" last="1964"/><audLevel>0.67</audLevel><creator>Furniss, Edgar S</creator><title>De Gaulle and the French Army; a crisis in civil-military relations</title></citation><citation><uniqueHoldings>1023</uniqueHoldings><holdings>1028</holdings><numEditions>3</numEditions><oclcnum>ocn009576275</oclcnum><exprid>sw009576275:lccn-n79-41762</exprid><isFiction>False</isFiction><recordType>book</recordType><date>1982</date><languages count="2"><lang code="fre" count="2"/><lang code="eng" count="1"/></languages><dates different="2" first="1982" last="1984"/><audLevel>0.56</audLevel><creator>Ledwidge, Bernard</creator><title>DeGaulle</title></citation><citation><uniqueHoldings>1001</uniqueHoldings><holdings>1049</holdings><numEditions>11</numEditions><oclcnum>ocn001954531</oclcnum><exprid>sw000702517:lccn-n79-41762</exprid><isFiction>False</isFiction><recordType>book</recordType><date>1960</date><languages count="1"><lang code="eng" count="11"/></languages><dates different="2" first="1960" last="1974"/><audLevel>0.68</audLevel><creator>Furniss, Edgar S</creator><title>France, troubled ally; De Gaulle's heritage and prospects</title></citation><citation><uniqueHoldings>998</uniqueHoldings><holdings>998</holdings><numEditions>4</numEditions><oclcnum>ocn000264169</oclcnum><exprid>sw000264169:lccn-n79-41762</exprid><isFiction>False</isFiction><recordType>book</recordType><date>1965</date><languages count="1"><lang code="eng" count="4"/></languages><dates different="1" first="1965" last="1965"/><audLevel>0.61</audLevel><creator>Viorst, Milton</creator><title>Hostile allies: FDR and Charles de Gaulle</title><summary>Analysis of the character and differing perspectives of the U.
