"But not all of my readers took the hint that another volume was to follow. A few looked forward to a second book, more were annoyed that I was apparently avoiding my New Deal adventures, and one reviewer remarked indignantly that in a biographical book by a man who held high office in an epochal period like the New Deal and knew everybody of importance in such a period, one would expect observations and reflections of historical significance. Whether my observations will have historical value I do not know, but perhaps they can serve as footnotes on the history of those fermenting years. I have tried to keep the characters in this other half of my career in the same human scale as those who inhabited A Casual Past. Much of the public work which I describe was in association with Franklin Roosevelt. He appointed me Chairman of the Labor Board, a judge on the bench of the Third Circuit, Solicitor General, and, finally, Attorney General"--My second volume, page [ix]

This volume deals "with the odd or lovable individuals who peopled my background, the eccentric Randolphs and Robinsons, the sturdy Biddles, and those who touched my youth, particularly certain lively women, and the teachers who in school and college tried to mold my character or rouse my curiosity; and finally the others who rubbed elbows with me in the rough-and-tumble of the practice of law"--By way of introduction, page 12

Russian-made documentary on the Nuremberg trials of Nazi war criminals, which offers a uniquely Soviet perspective on the historic events. Includes both trial footage and film used by the prosecution to show the Nazis' various crimes against humanity (including chilling actual footage of Hitler and many of those on trial, including members of his cabinet, party leaders, and officers from the German army, the SS and the Gestapo). Focuses on the Russian prosecutors and the crimes committed against the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, especially the attack on the Soviet Union, but acknowledges the German submarine war against the British in the Atlantic Ocean. Does not mention the Jewish Holocaust

Recommendation to amend the act of June 11, 1940 (54 Stat. 306 ; U.S.C. title 18, sec. 469), which made it a criminal offense to stow away on certain vessels. The amendment would delete the requirement that the stowaway be found on board the vessel at or before the time of arrival of the vessel. It would bring within prohibition of the act any person who is not discovered on the vessel, but who is apprehended after he disembarks. Immunity would not be granted to stowaways merely because they escape discovery until after they land
