The author writes "It may be presumptuous to call this biography 'A Portrait' of Bryon, but the persumption is lessened by the fact that the lines of the portrait are drawn from his own revelations in verse and prose, while the natural colours are filled in from ample recollections by contemporaries. What i have tried to do is to distil the essential Bryon from the mass of biographical material now available. I have given what explanation and interpretation seemed necessary, but have tried not to obtrude my 'philosophy of Byron' on the reader. I have seen little reason to paraphase Bryon when i could quote him. The trenchancy of his letters can seldom be bettered in mordern prose."
