Mike Kelley by Mike Kelley( Book )

8 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 368 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"From the mid-1970s, Mike Kelley assembled an incredibly diverse and often controversial body of work. A multidisciplinary impresario, he created works on paper, paintings, sculpture, video, installation, and performance art that managed to be at once shocking yet humorous, complex yet accessible. This companion volume to a much-anticipated exhibition brings a fresh understanding to the artist's work by seeking to address the more poetic aspects of Kelley's work through Eva Meyer-Hermann's unique curatorial approach. Here she presents individual works in new combinations that cross the boundaries of chronology, bodies of work, and former artistic project groups. Identifying themes such as architecture, language, identity, Informe, power, modernisms, nostalgia, and religion, the book represents ideas that have informed Kelley's work throughout his career. As a result, the overarching lines of his oeuvre become visible and accessible. This book features essays, a fully annotated plate section, and a newly researched and revised biography and bibliography of Kelley's work. The publication promises to be the definitive work on the artist"--

Still by Thomas Struth( Book )

14 editions published between 1998 and 2001 in 3 languages and held by 301 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Thomas Struth, born in Germany in 1954, ranks among the major figures of contemporary photography, along with his countrymen Andreas Gursky and Thomas Ruff. His work combines a rigorous style with a neutral, objective vision and an impressively precise technique. This authoritative monograph on Struth's work continues a notable tradition of books by German photographers from August Sander to Hilla and Bernd Becher, with whom Struth studied in the late 1970s. During that time Struth began to make steely black-and-white photographs of deserted city streets and decaying buildings, and out of these seemingly banal subjects emerged an incisive view of contemporary Western society. In recent years Struth's work has diversified in subject, scale, and color to embrace increasingly ambitious subjects and challenging locations

Marlene Dumas : the image as burden by Marlene Dumas( Book )

20 editions published in 2014 in 3 languages and held by 280 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Marlene Dumas is one of the most prominent and influential painters working today. In an era dominated by the mass media and a proliferation of images, her work is a testament to the meaning and potency of painting. Dumas draws on her expansive visual archive and the nuances of language to create intense, psychologically charged works which explore themes such as sexuality, love, death and guilt, often referencing art history and current affairs. Her paintings and drawings are characterized by their extraordinary expressiveness and sometimes controversial subject matter. This fully illustrated exhibition catalogue accompanies a major exhibition at the Tate Modern, the Stedelijk Museum and the Fondation Beyeler. Surveying the artist's oeuvre from the mid-70s to the present, it features over 100 of her most important paintings and drawings alongside lesser-known works from the early period of her career. The Image as Burden also includes a new interview with the artist; extracts from previously published but lesser-known texts (some available in English for the first time); and a new short story from prize-winning author Colm Tóibín written in response to the paintings. Essays and texts from a wide range of contributors examine the key themes and motifs in her work and reflect on Dumas' entire career

Kazimir Malevich and the Russian avant-garde : featuring selections from the Khardzhiev and Costakis collections : Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, 19 October 2013-2 February 2014 by Kazimir Severinovich Malevich( Book )

10 editions published in 2013 in 3 languages and held by 204 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Best known for his purely abstract work, Malevich was inspired by diverse art movements of his day. It will be surprising to many to recognize those influences in the work of Malevich: the light touches of Impressionism, the spirituality of Symbolism, Fauvism and exotic colored geometric cubism and primitivism next to futuristic dynamism. In the exhibition we follow Malevich's development to his 'own' Suprematism, as he established in paintings, spatial 'arkhitektons' and designs for opera and film. Attention is also paid to the figurative works from the period, which in the West initially were not valued, partly because they were totally unknown. The Khardzhiev and Costakis collections provide a context for this varied oeuvre by including many works by Malevich's fellow artists of the Russian avant-garde. Exhibition: Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands (19.10.2013-02.02.2014) / Bundeskunsthalle, Bonn, Germany (12.03.-21.06.2014) / Tate Modern, London, UK (17.07.-26.10.2014)
