Elizabeth was initially hesitant to publish the poems, feeling that they were too personal. However, her husband insisted that they were the best sequence of English-language sonnets since Shakespeare's time and urged her to publish them and challen

The Brownings, letters and poetry by Robert Browning( Book )

7 editions published in 1970 in English and held by 1,004 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The face of Robert Browning gives nothing away -- handsome and polished, it offers no hold to those who would pry into the soul behind. Its metallic mirror gives us back ourselves. But the face of Elizabeth Barret Browning speaks openly of her sufferings -- of ill health, of an iron father, of miscarriages -- yet speaking in the accents of courage and good sense. Any woman of sensitivity and talent can imagine herself as Elizabeth, in the hope that she might get as much as did Elizabeth out of a life which sometimes seemed to offer so little. No man can imagine himself as Robert. And if that is because genius is a mystery, it is even more because Robert Browning is a mystery. - p. 1

Casa Guidi windows by Elizabeth Barrett Browning( Book )

36 editions published between 1851 and 2013 in English and Undetermined and held by 595 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1847, Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-61) moved with her new husband to an apartment in Florence, in the wake of perhaps the most famous literary courtship of the nineteenth century. She soon took to calling their home the Casa Guidi. From there, she observed the events of the early Risorgimento. It was at this time that she produced some of her finest work, including Aurora Leigh and Casa Guidi Windows. An impressionistic and thoroughly atypical landmark in the Romantic canon, the latter was written in two parts, separated by several years. Beginning with the memory of a singing child and a lush description of Florence's beauty, the first part explores the air of optimism that permeates both the city and the narrator. By the second, disillusionment is rife: Florence has become the scene of demonstrations and broken political promises. This reissue of the 1851 first edition includes Barrett Browning's own introduction

Aurora Leigh : a poem : from the last London edition, corrected by the author by Elizabeth Barrett Browning( Book )

28 editions published between 1890 and 2014 in English and Undetermined and held by 345 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A novel in blank verse by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, published in 1857. The first-person narrative, which comprises some 11,000 lines, tells of the heroine's childhood and youth in Italy and England, her self-education in her father's hidden library, and her successful pursuit of a literary career. Initially resisting a marriage proposal by the philanthropist Romney Leigh, Aurora later surrenders her independence and weds her faithful suitor, whose own idealism has also since been tempered by experience. Aurora's career, Romney's social theories, and a melodramatic subplot concerning forced prostitution elicit the author's vivid observations on the importance of poetry, the individual's responsibility to society, and the victimization of women

54 editions published between 1898 and 2012 in English and German and held by 285 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1845, Browning met Elizabeth Barrett, who lived as a semi-invalid and virtual prisoner in her father's house in Wimpole Street. Gradually a significant romance developed between them, leading to their secret marriage and flight in 1846. (The marriage was initially secret because Elizabeth's father disapproved of marriage for any of his children.) From the time of their marriage, the Brownings lived in Italy, first in Pisa, and then, within a year, finding an apartment in Florence which they called Casa Guidi (now a museum to their memory). Their only child, Robert Wiedemann Barrett Browning
