Church dogmatics : a selection by Karl Barth( Book )

321 editions published between 1900 and 2013 in 6 languages and held by 3,136 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

To support his theory that Karl Barth can and should be studied as a religious theorist rather than just a theologian, Garrett Green presents a new translation of Paragraph 17 of Karl Barth's Church Dogmatics. This important new translation counters the idea that Barth rejected the notion of religion out of hand by correcting a number of errors in the original version that obscure Barth's central argument. In particular the crucial word °ufheburg' in the title is translated here as sublimation rather than abolition. This translation will do better justice to the German original and will be more accessible to contemporary readers. Unlike the original version, all Greek, Latin and Hebrew citations are translated into English. The translation is accompanied by a text by Garrett Green introducing the scholar and student to Barth as a religious theorist

The word of God and the word of man by Karl Barth( Book )

This classic volume of Barth's essays was first published in 1924 under the title 'Das Wort Gottes und die Theologie'. In this brand new English edition all the critical apparatus is translated, each chapter including an explanatory passage giving general historical context and details of Barth's own biography. These essays represent the very best of Barth's work. Far from being superceded by the Church Dogmatics, indeed, a thorough understanding of the Church Dogmatics must presuppose a close knowledge of them. The style is vivid, deeply engaged and engaging, often expressionistic (making fre

The humanity of God by Karl Barth( Book )

27 editions published between 1960 and 1999 in English and German and held by 1,256 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In "The humanity of God", the author lays the cornerstone for his new evangelical theology by stating that the deity of God, rightly understood, includes his humanity. This is the irrefutable good news of God's acceptance of man through Christ. In "Evangelical theology in the 19th century", he examines the theology of liberalism against which he and his fellows reacted. In the last essay, "The gift of freedom", he deals with practical problems of the Christian life. The author finds the basis of evangelical ethics in the overwhelming fact that God has made made free and chosen man to be his child and a partner in his work
God here and now by Karl Barth( Book )

The seven addresses here translated were originally delivered since 1950 by the Swiss theologian Karl Barth before such diverse audiences as the Amsterdam Assembly of the World Council of Churches and a select gathering of secular European intellectuals. The selection and arrangement of the material by the author and the editor of this volume are designed to give a fair presentation of Barth's mature thought

The Epistle to the Philippians by Karl Barth( Book )

40 editions published between 1927 and 2002 in 3 languages and held by 884 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Designed to make the latest scholarship on Philippians accessible to a broader readership, this new commentary brings to life both the letter's historical setting and its vigorously theological purpose. A number of important recent studies of the social and religious context of first-century Philippi are here considered for the first time in a commentary, and the author offers a critical engagement with several of the newer approaches to Pauline interpretation, including questions of rhetoric and social convention. Theological highlights include the themes of Christian joy in all circumstances, the Philippians' active 'stake-holding' partnership in the gospel, and above all the pervasive passion for a union with Christ in following his self-humbling example of service. Giving due attention both to the theological heritage of St. Paul's Jewish background and to the Greco-Roman social and religious setting of his readership, this commentary relates a well-grounded understanding of the letter's first-century impact to the wider concerns of Christian theology
A shorter commentary on Romans by Karl Barth( Book )

60 editions published between 1956 and 2016 in 5 languages and held by 872 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This reissue of Barth's A Shorter Commentary on Romans links to the renewed interest today in a 'theological' interpretation of Scripture. In response to the modern preoccupation with what lies behind the text (the author's context), and to a postmodern preoccupation with what lies in front of the text (the reader's context), both theologians and biblical scholars are asking the following questions: 'What is the relationship between the biblical text, interpreter and God?' 'Can the Bible be read both as an historical document and as a text that speaks to us today, and if so, how can it do so?'
Church dogmatics by Karl Barth( Book )

5 editions published between 1956 and 2004 in English and held by 15 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Described by Pope Pius XII as the most important theologian since Thomas Aquinas, the Swiss pastor and theologian, Karl Barth, continues to be a major influence on students, scholars and preachers today. Barth''s theology found its expression mainly through his closely reasoned fourteen-part magnum opus, Die Kirchliche Dogmatik. Having taken over 30 years to write, the Church Dogmatics is regarded as one of the most important theological works of all time, and represents the pinnacle of Barth''s achievement as a theologian
