To support his theory that Karl Barth can and should be studied as a religious theorist rather than just a theologian, Garrett Green presents a new translation of Paragraph 17 of Karl Barth's Church Dogmatics. This important new translation counters the idea that Barth rejected the notion of religion out of hand by correcting a number of errors in the original version that obscure Barth's central argument. In particular the crucial word °ufheburg' in the title is translated here as sublimation rather than abolition. This translation will do better justice to the German original and will be more accessible to contemporary readers. Unlike the original version, all Greek, Latin and Hebrew citations are translated into English. The translation is accompanied by a text by Garrett Green introducing the scholar and student to Barth as a religious theorist
The word of God and the word of man by Karl Barth( Book )

41 editions published between 1924 and 2011 in 4 languages and held by 1,884 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This classic volume of Barth's essays was first published in 1924 under the title 'Das Wort Gottes und die Theologie'. In this brand new English edition all the critical apparatus is translated, each chapter including an explanatory passage giving general historical context and details of Barth's own biography. These essays represent the very best of Barth's work. Far from being superceded by the Church Dogmatics, indeed, a thorough understanding of the Church Dogmatics must presuppose a close knowledge of them. The style is vivid, deeply engaged and engaging, often expressionistic (making frequent use of irony and hyperbole). Peter Gay described Weimar culture as a "dance on the edge of a volcano." If so, then it was essays like these that provided the music. -- Back cover

The humanity of God by Karl Barth( Book )

27 editions published between 1960 and 1999 in English and German and held by 1,255 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In "The humanity of God", the author lays the cornerstone for his new evangelical theology by stating that the deity of God, rightly understood, includes his humanity. This is the irrefutable good news of God's acceptance of man through Christ. In "Evangelical theology in the 19th century", he examines the theology of liberalism against which he and his fellows reacted. In the last essay, "The gift of freedom", he deals with practical problems of the Christian life. The author finds the basis of evangelical ethics in the overwhelming fact that God has made made free and chosen man to be his child and a partner in his work

The selection and arrangement of the material by the author and the editor of this volume are designed to give a fair presentation of Barth's mature thought
