Forty years of Biblical Studies at Sheffield provide cause for celebration and this book is an excellent expression of it ... There is a good balance between Old Testament and New Testament ... There are eighteen essays in the book altogether ... all highly readable and informative. Sheffield is to be congratulated on its forty years, on this self-provided Festschrift, and more generally, on its phenomenal contribution to publishing in the biblical field.' (W.D. Stacey, Journal of Theological Studies)

Living through the dead : burial and commemoration in the classical world by Maureen Carroll( Book )

2 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 178 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume investigates the archaeology of death and commemoration through thematically linked case studies drawn from the Classical world. These investigations stress the processes of burial and commemoration as inherently social and designed for an audience, and they explore the meaning and importance attached to preserving memory. While previous investigations of Greek and Roman death and burial have tended to concentrate on period- or regionally-specific sets of data, this volume instead focuses on a series of topical connections that highlight important facets of death and commemoration significant to the larger Classical world. Living through the Dead investigates the subject of death and commemoration from a diverse set of archaeologically informed approaches, including visual reception, detailed analysis of excavated remains, landscape, and post-classical reflections and draws on artefactual, documentary and pictorial evidence. The nine papers present recent research by some of the leading voices on the subject, as well as some fresh perspectives. Case studies come from Thermopylae, the Bosporan kingdom, Athens, Republican Rome, Pompeii and Egypt. As a collected volume, they provide thematically linked investigations of key issues in ritual, memory and (self)presentation associated with death and burial in the Classical period

Cataloguing and classification in British university libraries; a survey of practices and procedures, by Joan Friedman and Alan Jeffreys by Joan M Friedman( Book )

5 editions published in 1967 in English and held by 128 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This comparative survey of current practices in classification and cataloging of printed materials was concerned with six questions: (1) What procedures are involved in cataloging and classification? (2) Could some of this work be done by a centralized cataloging service? (3) Who is doing the work of cataloging now and what are his qualifications? (4) What proportion of library time and money is being spent on cataloging? (5) Is there any degree of uniformity in the cataloging practices of the various university libraries? (6) Are the resultant catalogs being used? The questionnaire used as a basis for the survey was distributed to sixty-nine British college and university libraries with a return rate of seventy-four percent. The information given relates to the situation as of the end of 1965 and for the purposes of the analysis the replies were categorized according to type and size of library. The major part of the document presents the analysis of each question in the questionnaire and also the relationships found among some of the questions. It was concluded that more study of classification schemes and the kinds of information desirable in a catalog entry is needed. The effective use of mechanized techniques in the future will demand more standardization of practices among librarians than exists at the present. (Cm)
