Theodicy : essays on the goodness of God, the freedom of man, and the origin of evil by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz( Book )

358 editions published between 1710 and 2015 in 12 languages and held by 2,782 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In order to be truly free, must you act arbitrarily? If an event did not happen, could it have happened? Since there is evil, and God could have made the world without evil, did God fail to pick the best course? Grappling with such simple£yet still intriguing£puzzles, Leibniz was able to present attractively his new theories of the real and the phenomenal, freewill and determinism, and the relation between minds and bodies. Theodicy was Leibniz's only book-length work to be published in his lifetime, and for many years the work by which he was known to the world. Fully at home with the latest scientific advances, Leibniz ultimately rejected the new atomistic philosophies of Descartes, Gassendi, and Hobbes, and drew upon the old cosmology of Aristotelian scholasticism. There could be no conflict, he argued, between faith and reason, freedom and necessity, natural and divine law. Ingeniously defending his postulate of pre-established harmony, Leibniz made important advances in the precise analysis of concepts"--Publisher description
The philosophical writings of Leibniz by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz( Book )

103 editions published between 1740 and 2010 in 3 languages and held by 1,816 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

These 'shorter philosophical works' by Leibniz offer a summary of the philosopher's major works. The essays on monadology - unpublished in Leibniz's lifetime - appeared here for the first time in their original form as taken from his papers. This is a reprint of the second edition of 1740 which contained an improved translation of the Monadology and was augmented by the inclusion of Leibniz's correspondence with Samuel Clarke. Translated by Heinrich Köhler, and with an introduction by Christian Wolff, this edition also forms a contribution to the study of the reception of Leibniz's work by the Wolffian school, which influenced the interpretation of Leibniz not only in terms of style and terminology. Anyone who wants to read Leibniz 'en philosophe' will find this edition invaluable

Leibniz's Monadology : a new translation and guide by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz( Book )

394 editions published between 1728 and 2014 in 18 languages and held by 1,135 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A fresh translation and in-depth commentary of Leibniz's seminal text, the Monadology Written in 1714, the Monadology is widely considered to be the classic statement of Leibniz's mature philosophy. In the space of 90 numbered paragraphs, totalling little more than 6000 words, Leibniz outlines - and argues for - the core features of his philosophical system. Although rightly regarded as a masterpiece, it is also a very condensed work that generations of students have struggled to understand. Lloyd Strickland presents a new translation of the Monadology, alongside key parts of the Theodicy, and an in-depth, section-by-section commentary that explains in detail not just what Leibniz is saying in the text but also why he says it. The sharp focus on the various arguments and other justifications Leibniz puts forward makes possible a deeper and more sympathetic understanding of his doctrines

Metaphysische Abhandlung by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz( Book )

186 editions published between 1907 and 2010 in 9 languages and held by 936 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Protogaea by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz( Book )

"Protogaea is an ambitious account of terrestrial history, was central to the development of the earth sciences in the eighteenth century and provides key philosophical insights into the unity of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz's thought and writings. Though the works of Leibniz have been widely translated into English, Protogaea has languished in its original Latin for centuries. Now Claudine Cohen and Andre Wakefield offer the first English translation of this central text in natural philosophy and natural history."--Jacket
G.W. Leibniz's Monadology : an edition for students by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz( Book )

14 editions published between 1991 and 2013 in English and held by 314 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

G.W. Leibniz's Monadology, one of the most important pieces of the Leibniz corpus, is at once one of the great classics of modern philosophy and one of its most puzzling productions. Because the essay is written in so condensed and compact a fashion, for almost three centuries it has baffled and beguiled those who read it for the first time. Nicholas Rescher accompanies the text of the Monadology section-by-section with relevant excerpts from some of Leibniz's widely scattered discussions of the matters at issue. The result serves a dual purpose of providing a commentary of the Monadology

Confessio philosophi : papers concerning the problem of evil, 1671-1678 by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz( Book )

10 editions published between 2004 and 2005 in English and held by 204 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume contains papers that represent Leibniz's early thoughts on the problem of evil, centring on a dialogue, the Confessio philosophi, in which he formulates a general account of God's relation to sin and evil that becomes a fixture in his thinking. How can God be understood to be the ultimate cause, asks Leibniz, without God being considered as the author of sin, a conclusion incompatible with God's holiness? Leibniz's attempts to justify the way of God to humans lead him to deep discussion of related topics: the nature of free choice, the problems of necessitarianism and fatalism, the nature of divine justice and holiness. All but one of the writings presented here are available in English for the first time
