The Lettres provinciales (Provincial letters) are a series of eighteen letters written by French philosopher and theologian Blaise Pascal under the pseudonym Louis de Montalte. Written in the midst of the formulary controversy between the Jansenists and the Jesuits, they are a defense of the Jansenist Antoine Arnauld from Port-Royal-des-Champs, a friend of Pascal who in 1656 was condemned by the Faculte de Théologie at the Sorbonne in Paris for views that were claimed to be heretical. The First letter is dated January 23, 1656 and the Eighteenth March 24, 1657. A fragmentary Nineteenth letter

Pascal by A. J Krailsheimer( Book )

14 editions published between 1966 and 2011 in English and Portuguese and held by 390 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Blaise Pascal, the precociously brilliant contemporary of Descartes, was a gifted mathematician and physicist, but it is his unfinished apologia for the Christian religion upon which his reputation now rests. The Pensees is a collection of philosophical fragments, notes and essays in which he explores the contradictions of human nature in psychological, social, metaphysical and, above all, theological terms. Mankind emerges from Pascal's analysis as a wretched and desolate creature within an impersonal universe, but also as a being whose existence can be transformed through faith in God's grace. This masterly translation conveys Pascal's disarmingly personal tone and captures all the fire and passion of the original. Also contained in this volume are a comparison between different editions, appendices and a bibliography.". - Back Cover

"This volume contains: 1st, an account of the "Various Editions of Pascal's Thoughts;" 2d, an essay on the "Genius and Writings of Pascal;" 3d, "Pascal considered as a Philosophic Skeptic;" 4th, the "Thoughts of Pascal;" 5th, the "Letters of Pascal;" and 6th, the "Opuscules of Pascal." We take leave of Pascal with regret. Many holy hours we have spent in his company, and have thanked the Omniscient for such a revelation in man of moral and intellectual force. We regard Pascal not only as the greatest genius but as the holiest man that France has produced. To the young men of America we commend a writer in whom greatness and rectitude of mind were combined in an equal degree"--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)
