George Inness and the visionary landscape by Adrienne Baxter Bell( Book )

4 editions published between 2003 and 2006 in English and held by 789 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"George Inness and the Visionary Landscape includes forty color reproductions of Inness's most important paintings and presents both a chronological overview of Inness's life and a more focused treatment of the artist's main philosophical and religious preoccupations. Central to his thinking were the writings of the Swedish scientist-turned-visionary Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772), who influenced many of Inness's contemporaries, including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and Walt Whitman. George Inness also suggests resonances between the artist's visionary landscapes and the concurrent efforts, on the part of the psychologist-philosopher William James (1842-1910), to validate the existence of mystical states of mind. It shows Inness to have anticipated many of the most important tenets of modernism, an achievement that continues to inspire contemporary audiences."--Jacket

Black womanhood : images, icons, and ideologies of the African body by Hood Museum of Art( Book )

3 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 605 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Explorations of contemporary art have focused on issues of identity and race for some time. Few, however, have sought to investigate these themes by juxtaposing historical and contemporary frameworks. Black Womanhood examines an especially charged icon - the black female body - and contemporary artists' interventions upon historical images of black women as exotic Others, erotic fantasies, and supermaternal Mammies." "This book presents icons of the black female body as seen from three separate but intersecting perspectives: the traditional African, the colonial, and the contemporary global. The display and contemplation of such iconic images addresses complex and often competing forces of self-presentation and the representation of others. Peeling back layers of social, cultural, and political realities, Black Womanhood explores how historic icons inform contemporary artistic responses to the black female body through an examination of themes such as beauty, fertility and sexuality, maternity, and women's roles and power in society."--Jacket

Kimono as art : the landscapes of Itchiku Kubota by Itchiku Kubota( Book )

2 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 17 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This lavishly illustrated book presents fifty-five masterworks by Japanese kimono artist Itchiku Kubota. His unique style - inspired by the fragile dyed silks of sixteenth -century Japan, and developed after twenty years of experimentation - combines stitch-resist, ink drawing, embroidery, metallic leaf and a complex layering of colours to create hauntingly beautiful landscapes with richly textured surfaces." "In the artist's magnum opus Symphony of Light - showcased in this volume together with his fivepiece Mount Fuji series and ten individual works the monumental kimono are intended to be shown sequentially, and were made only for display. Featured on a special fold-out section, Kubota's remarkable imagery can be fully appreciated as it extends from robe to robe. With this work Kubota created an entirely new concept of landscape representation on the kimono, elevating the quintessential Japanese garment to the level of installation art." "Published to accompany a travelling exhibition of the same name - a collaboration between the San Diego Museum of Art, Timken Museum of Art, Canton Museum of Art and the Itchiku Kubota Art Museum - the catalogue includes essays by Dale Carolyn Gluckman and Hollis Goodall; a preface by Satoshi Kubota, Itchiku's son and artistic heir; and an interview with Satoshi Kubota by Derrick R. Cartwright of the San Diego Museum of Art. All shed new light on Itchiku's artistic vision. Complete with a biography, an overview of the artist's basic production techniques, a glossary and a bibliography, this is the first major publication on a master of exceptional virtuosity."--Jacket
