Japanese governance beyond Japan Inc. by Jennifer Ann Amyx ( )
10 editions published between 2002 and 2003 in English and held by 469 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Japan Inc was once used to describe the powerful political and economic system that delivers Japan's transformation to an industrial power. This book is about the breakdown and failure of policy coherence in Japan in the 1990s and how the political economy of Japan has changed in response. The essays in the volume seek to identify where change has occurred, as well as where things have not changed and why. The issue of policymaking transparency is accorded particular attention. The book covers a wide range of Japanese institutions and policy areas, including the political party system, electoral and legal reforms, deliberation councils and the financial and agricultural sectors. The findings suggest that resistance to change through the political system is at the root of Japan's inability to deal with its national policy problems. Nonetheless, there has been considerable reform and change towards more open economic and political competition. And, these changes profoundly affect the way in which foreign governments must now relate to domestic political processes in their dealings with Japan.; This interdisciplinary book draws together contributions from experts in political science, economics, law and Japanese studies to give a deeper understanding of how Japan's political economy and policymaking processes are working today

This 1998 book was the first in a major series examining Global Economic Institutions and contrasts regional economic integration in the Asia Pacific Region and in Europe. In the Asia Pacific Region at the time of publication, regionalism was developing by means of 'open regionalism', constructed through the APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Process). This was different from the regionalism which had developed in Europe, through the construction of a single European Market and Monetary Union within the European Union. In the light
China's entry to the WTO : strategic issues and quantitative assessments ( Book )
14 editions published between 2000 and 2002 in English and held by 335 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The future of China's modernisation is dependent on the reactions of the rest of the world to China's economic growth. China's membership of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) is a crucial part of this process. This volume provides a detailed up-to-date analysis of the strategic issues and policy options of China's accession to the WTO. It explains why China needs the WTO and why the WTO needs China. Quantitative analysis demonstrates how tariff reduction resulting from China's accession to the WTO will benefit the Chinese economy as well as the rest of the world. The book argues that there is no single trade policy initiative likely to result in larger gains in international trade in the foreseeable future than China's accession to the WTO. Featuring contributions from an international selection of leading economists and China experts, this book is a timely and valuable addition to the literature on international trade, China and Asian economics

The new economy in East Asia and the Pacific by Peter Drysdale ( Book )
11 editions published between 2002 and 2004 in English and held by 252 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Has the new economy permanently changed the way leading economies work? How can its beneficial effects be transmitted to countries in the early stages of economic development? Why is Japan continuing to stagnate in a potentially prosperous age and Australia, with a smaller industrial and information technology base, is doing well? This book sets out the problems of measuring the effects of technological change on economic progress by using the internet in the Asia-Pacific region as a case study. Corporate and industry experience, including changing business organization and new regulatory issues are explored as well as policy issues such as the digital divide and the approach to e-commerce in the WTO. Using several industry case studies the contributors compare the IT experience in North America with a number of countries in Asia and the Pacific. With contributions by a number of distinguished authors, The New Economy in East Asia and the Pacific is an essential volume for policy-makers, corporate strategists and scholars concerned with understanding the effects of the new economy and its impact in Asia and the Pacific
