Waves on beaches and resulting sediment transport; proceedings of an advanced seminar conducted by the Mathematics Research Center, the University of Wisconsin, and the Coastal Engineering Research Center, U.S. Army, at Madison October 11-13, 1971 by R. E Meyer( Book )

6 editions published in 1972 in English and Undetermined and held by 503 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Waves on Beaches and Resulting Sediment Transport documents the proceedings of an Advanced Seminar held in October, 1971, aiming to offer a coherent, interdisciplinary view of the state of physical research in coastal oceanography and the direction in which this subject is moving. The articles range from wave refraction to littoral erosion, and the authors from geologists to mathematicians. The book opens with a study on the characteristics of wave records in the coastal zone. This is followed by separate chapters on sediment transport in beaches; equations for water waves; small-amplitude nor

Applications of bifurcation theory : proceedings of an advanced seminar by Paul H Rabinowitz( Book )

6 editions published in 1977 in English and held by 352 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The papers discuss bifurcation problems in such areas as elasticity theory, fluid dynamics, geophysics, astrophysics, meteorology, statistical mechanics, and chemical kinetics. There are also two papers of a more mathematical nature: the volume begins with a discussion of analytical methods for bifurcation problems and concludes with a paper on numerical approaches to bifurcation questions
Mathematical aspects of finite elements in partial differential equations : proceedings of a symposium conducted by the Mathematics Research Center, the University of Wisconsin--Madison, April 1-3, 1974 by Carl De Boor( Book )

6 editions published in 1974 in English and held by 351 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Mathematical Aspects of Finite Elements in Partial Differential Equations addresses the mathematical questions raised by the use of finite elements in the numerical solution of partial differential equations. This book covers a variety of topics, including finite element method, hyperbolic partial differential equation, and problems with interfaces.Organized into 13 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the class of finite element subspaces with numerical examples. This text then presents as models the Dirichlet problem for the potential and bipotential operator and discusses the ques

Nonlinear programming by Olvi L Mangasarian( Book )

6 editions published between 1970 and 2014 in English and held by 313 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is a concise, rigorous, yet accessible, account of the fundamentals of constrained optimization theory. Many problems arising in diverse fields such as machine learning, medicine, chemical engineering, structural design, and airline scheduling can be reduced to a constrained optimization problem. This book provides readers with the fundamentals needed to study and solve such problems. Beginning with a chapter on linear inequalities and theorems of the alternative, basics of convex sets and separation theorems are then derived based on these theorems. This is followed by a chapter on convex functions that includes theorems of the alternative for such functions. These results are used in obtaining the saddlepoint optimality conditions of nonlinear programming without differentiability assumptions
