Defect interactions and relaxation phenomena associated with electronic motion in semiconducting ceramics by C Bauer( Book )

2 editions published in 1969 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Studies of the defect structures and mass transport in alkali halides and nonstoichiometric compounds are reported. Some regular solution statistical mechanical treatments were used to quantitatively predict the pairwise interaction energies between nearest-neighbor point defects in metal-excess, nonstoichiometric compounds. The ionic conductivity of pure and doped NaF was measured over a wide range of temperature and these results were analyzed by a nonlinear least-square method to yield the usual defect parameters. Interdiffusion and defect structure measurements on NiO + CoO solid solutions were carried out at elevated temperatures with the aid of appropriate x-ray methods. The diffusion observations are rationalized on the basis of the equilibrium defect structure inferred from integrated x-ray intensity data on these oxide solid solutions. (Author)

Investigation of CNTD SiC on Complex Shapes( Book )

1 edition published in 1981 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The present report describes efforts to develop chemical vapor deposition (CVD) techniques for applying uniform coatings of structural ceramic materials to a complex shape. Both Si3N4 and SiC were used in the program, and the shape chosen to demonstrate the capabilities of the specially designed reactor was an airfoil--in particular a Si3N4 vane and a SiC blade. Mechanical testing of a coated carbon/carbon composite at elevated temperatures in air by G. D Quinn( Book )

2 editions published in 1986 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The controlled nucleation thermochemical deposition (CNTD) process can apply a silicon carbide coating to carbon/carbon (C/C) composites. Coated C/ C composite materials are potentially useful in advanced gas turbine engines particularly as static components, although rotating components are feasible. Success of such a system will require a coating that will ensure oxidation resistance and mechanical integrity. This report represents a preliminary characterization of mechanical properties of a silicon carbide coated, C/C composite at ambient and elevated temperature in air. The coating was applied by the controlled nucleation thermochemical deposition (CNTD) process. The strength, static fatigue, and oxidation results of the coated composite were favorable at temperatures up to 2372 F (1300 C) in air. Synthesis and Consolidation of Nanoparticles( )

1 edition published in 1994 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Nanomaterials synthesis and characterization have been very active development fields for many years, motivated by the prospect of extremely high mechanical properties coupled with useful plasticity and elevated temperature properties. We will briefly review the history of nanomaterials research, describe the principal synthesis routes for particles, and review the availability of consolidation technology capable of producing shapes which may demonstrate the physical properties which researchers have predicted and expected. We have concluded from our review and from our own research in nanomaterials, that much more effort now be invested in consolidation development in order to begin the commercialization of nanograined solids as engineering materials. We will emphasize consolidation process efforts which, for the most part, seem to be in their infancy with regard to nanomaterials. Nanocrystalline, Nanophase, Consolidation, Powder synthesis
