Arrian by Arrian ( Book )
65 editions published between 1901 and 1999 in 5 languages and held by 1,828 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Arrian (Flavius Arrianus), of the period ca. AD 95-175, was a Greek historian and philosopher of Nicomedia in Bithynia. Both a Roman and an Athenian citizen, he was governor of the Roman province of Cappadocia 132-137, and repelled an invasion of the Alani in 134. He retired then to Athens (where he was archon in 148-149) and later to Nicomedia. Arrian's Anabasis of Alexander in seven books is the best account we have of Alexander's adult life. Indica, a description of India and of Nearchus's voyage therefrom, was to be a supplement. A student of Epictetus, Arrian took notes at his lectures and published them (in eight books of which we have four, The Discourses) and also the Encheiridion or Manual of Epictetus. Both works are available in the Loeb Epictetus edition." -- Book jacket

The Discourses as reported by Arrian ; The manual ; and, the fragments by Epictetus ( Book )
24 editions published between 1926 and 1998 in 3 languages and held by 215 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Epictetus ('Acquired', probably his real name) was a crippled Greek slave of Phrygia during Nero's reign (A.D.54-68) who heard lectures by the Stoic Musonius before he was freed. Expelled with other philosophers by the emperor Domitian in 89 or 92 he settled permanently in Nicopolis in Epirus and, in a school which he called 'healing place for sick souls', taught a practical philosophy, details of which were taken down by his pupil Flavius Arrianus and survive in four books of 'Diatribae' or Discourses and a smaller 'Encheiridon' or Handbook which gives brifly the chief doctrines of the other work. He lived apparently into the reign of Hadrian (A.D. 117-138). Epictetus was a teacher and preacher of practical Stoic ethics, broad and firm in method, sublime in thought, and now humorous, now sad or severe in spirit. How should one live righteously? Our god-given will is our paramount possession, and we must not covet others'. We must not resist fortune. Man is part of a system of men and God; men are reasoning beings (in feeble bodies) and must conform to God's mind and the will of nature. Epictetus presents us also with a pungent picture of the perfect (Stoic) man

Alexander the Great : the Anabasis and the Indica by Arrian ( Book )
6 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 166 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"In twelve years that changed the world, Alexander the Great conquered a vast empire, extending from the Danube to the rivers of the Punjab, and from Egypt to Uzbekistan. Arrian, a Greek man of letters, military commander, and holder of the highest political offices in both Rome and Athens, wrote the definitive account of Alexander's life and campaigns, published as the Anabasis. A dramatic fast-moving story, told with great narrative skill, his work is now our prime and most detailed source for the history of Alexander--a compelling account of an exceptional leader, brilliant, ruthless, passionate, and complex. Martin Hammond's engaging translation-new for this volume--is fully alive to the literary qualities of Arrian's prose, making this the most readable and attractive modern version. This is also the only edition of the Anabasis to include Arrian's companion piece, the Indica, a fascinating account of the voyage of Alexander's fleet from south India to the Persian Gulf, with descriptions of the geography, customs, and natural curiosities of India. John Atkinson's Introduction sets Arrian in his historical context and describes the life of Alexander as it is reflected in his work. In addition. this volume includes extensive notes that identify historical references and allusions, and highlight the interplay of historical and literary issues. Lastly readers will also find three invaluable appendices, maps and site plans, and a comprehensive analytical index."--Publisher's website
