The Sketchpad system uses drawing as a novel means of communicating with a computer. The system contains input, output, and computation programs that enable it to interpret information drawn directly on a computer display. It has been used to draw electrical, mechanical, scientific, mathematical and animated drawings; it is a general-purpose system. Sketchpad has shown the most usefulness as an aid to the understanding of processes, such as the motion of link ages, which can be described with pictures. The report discusses some high-leverage research areas in microcircuit fabrication, not now receiving government or private support, where relatively small, advanced research efforts may have substantial payoff. Based on the fact that microcircuit fabrication has reached or almost reached limitations in both size and precision, the study focuses on a number of areas where progress can be made, identifying those adequately covered by existing programs and highlighting those where relatively little work is being done. The authors recommend four important research efforts aimed at: (1) making small devices; (2) measuring the limits of dimensional stability of silicon substrates and mask materials; (3) predicting the optimum feature size, die size, and wafer size, given the constraints of the newly evolving technology; (4) understanding the system design implications of very-large-scale integrated circuits. 'The potential for future capability is truly impressive, ' say the authors, who believe that the integrated circuit revolution has run only half its course and that a change in microcircuit complexity of four more orders of magnitude is highly probable

Advances in computing has come from improvements in integrated circuits and improvements in our ability to produce complex software systems. Display technology has reached the point where it is possible to display almost anything the human mind can conceive. Installation of complex computing machines changes the nature of the organization it serves, thus it is difficult to establish in advance clear specifications. The increasing complexity of computing equipment will ultimately force a change in Navy procurement procedures. Operating units of the Fleet will have to be given greater control over the specification and modification of the equipment they operate. Careful consideration needs to be given to how the specifications for complex computing devices are written, and those who use the devices need to have a say in the process

The objective of this investigation was to evaluate a 1600-pound, six-legged, gasoline-powered, self-contained, man-carrying, hydraulically-actuated, walking machine built by Sutherland, Sproull and Associates. We were interested in the task of programming the control computer, the problems of operator control, and the performance of the vehicle. The walking machine presents two technical problems. The first is how best to permit the operator to control it. A control stick and two foot pedals provide operator inputs, and we connected them in various ways to give the driver control of the machine's path, direction, and speed. In addition, we experimented with different algorithms to select the particular uses of particular legs. The second technical problem posed by the walking machine comes about because of the topology of the hydraulic circuits that actuate it. Rather than using a separate servomechanism for each joint, the hydraulic circuits of this machine permit actuators from several of its joints to be made a part of a single hydraulic circuit. Parallel connections of actuators permit leg to share load equally; series connections force them to move synchronously. By setting valves to establish series and parallel hydraulic circuits, the control computer can obtain coordinated joint motions without further direct action. We learned a great deal about the strengths and weaknesses of this approach to leg coordination

Additive manufacturing has the potential to positively affect human spaceflight operations by enabling the in-orbit manufacture of replacement parts and tools, which could reduce existing logistics requirements for the International Space Station and future long-duration human space missions. The benefits of in-space additive manufacturing for robotic spacecraft are far less clear, although this rapidly advancing technology can also potentially enable space-based construction of large structures and, perhaps someday, substantially in the future, entire spacecraft. Additive manufacturing can also help to reimagine a new space architecture that is not constrained by the design and manufacturing confines of gravity, current manufacturing processes, and launch-related structural stresses. The specific benefits and potential scope of additive manufacturing remain undetermined. The realities of what can be accomplished today, using this technology on the ground, demonstrate the substantial gaps between the vision for additive manufacturing in space and the limitations of the technology and the progress that has to be made to develop it for space use. 3D Printing in Space evaluates the prospects of in-space additive manufacturing. This report examines the various technologies available and currently in development, and considers the possible impacts for crewed space operations and robotic spacecraft operations. Ground-based additive manufacturing is being rapidly developed by industry, and 3D Printing in Space discusses government-industry investments in technology development. According to this report, the International Space Station provides an excellent opportunity for both civilian and military research on additive manufacturing technology. Additive manufacturing presents potential opportunities, both as a tool in a broad toolkit of options for space-based activities and as a potential paradigm-changing approach to designing hardware for in-space activities. This report makes recommendations for future research, suggests objectives for an additive manufacturing roadmap, and envisions opportunities for cooperation and joint development
