Anselm Kiefer by Daniel Arasse( Book )

13 editions published between 2001 and 2012 in 3 languages and held by 863 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Anselm Kiefer (b. 1945) is one of the most important and controversial artists of the twentieth century. This book, the first to analyze the essence of his work, begins with Kiefer's arrival on the international art scene at the 1980 Venice Biennale, when he sparked heated debate and controversy over the "Germanity" of his pieces. Since that time, through such diverse mediums as painting, gouache and watercolor, photography, artist's books, engravings, installations, and sculpture, Kiefer has created a body of work that is protean, theatrical, monumental, or intimate, depending on the period. He has interpreted the great political and cultural issues at the heart of the modern European sensibility: the connections among memory, history, and mythology; war; the Holocaust; and ethnic and national identity."--Jacket
Anselm Kiefer and art after Auschwitz by Lisa Saltzman( Book )

7 editions published between 1999 and 2000 in English and held by 634 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Anselm Kiefer and Art After Auschwitz examines the possibilities and limits of painting in the aftermath of the Holocaust. Positioning Kiefer as a deeply learned artist who encounters and represents history in painted rather than written form, Lisa Saltzman contends that Kiefer's work is unique among postwar German artists in his persistent exploration of the legacy of fascism. Formally, thematically, and philosophically, Kiefer's work probes the aesthetic and ethical dilemma of representing the unrepresentable, the historical catastrophe into whose aftermath the artist was born
Anselm Kiefer : works on paper in the Metropolitan Museum of Art by Nan Rosenthal( Book )

14 editions published between 1998 and 1999 in English and held by 533 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The highly regarded German artist Anselm Kiefer (b. 1945) began his career in the late 1960s, during a period when his country's intellectuals were involved in facing up to their nation's recent history - the Holocaust and the Nazi rape of Europe. Kiefer's work has continually dealt with these heretofore "taboo" subject matters, as well as with other elements of German culture and history, and it has effectively incorporated the provocative usage of both traditional and nontraditional materials." "Kiefer is best known for his very large works, and this publication provides an unusually detailed look at the least-known aspect of his oeuvre, his smaller works on paper. There are fifty-four works on paper in this volume, and they cover the years from 1969 to 1993. They entered the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1995. Fifty-one are in a great variety of media - watercolors, acrylics, and painted-over photographs, for example - and they are thought to represent about one-fourth of the unique works on paper that Kiefer created between 1969 and the end of the 1980s. The remaining three are very large works composed of numerous woodcuts made slightly earlier and mounted together. The entire group comprises a comprehensive sampling of Kiefer's talent for blending biting commentary and humor."--Jacket

Over your cities grass will grow by Sophie Fiennes( Visual )

9 editions published between 2010 and 2013 in French and English and held by 191 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1993, artist Anselm Kiefer left Buchen, Germany for La Ribaute, a derelict silk factory near Barjac, a town in the south of France. Like a strange, sprawling village, La Ribaute extends over 35 hectares and is composed of old industrial buildings and working studios. From 2000, Kiefer began constructing a series of elaborate installations and paintings, creating pavilions to house them, while also digging a network of tunnels underneath the pavilions. OVER YOUR CITIES GRASS WILL GROW takes you into Kiefer's artistic estate to discover these sights and more-including an underground pool at the cul-de-sac of a tubular iron tunnel embedded within a crypt, a 20-meter tiered concrete amphitheater, and an open landscape of concrete towers assembled like so many card houses. Traversing this landscape, director Sophie Fiennes' critically acclaimed film immerses the audience in the total world and creative process of one of today's most significant and inventive artists

Memorabillia' looks into the idea of remembering in pictures and handwritten texts, as well as in books, which in Anselm Kiefer's case manage even without words. It features Kiefer's works acquired by Peter and Irene Ludwig from as early as the 1970s and 1980s. "Accompanying Anselm Kiefer on this pictorial journey is a demanding, but without doubt excellent adventure. The latter because your eyes wander through a uniquely real aesthetic and the former because Kiefer demands a great deal from the viewer. This is due to the fact that the history behind the histories demands a significant amount of knowledge and mental work. However, it is worth following Kiefer, as he, in contrast to other artists, does not simply illustrate histories. His narratives get to the heart of history. Kiefer is both an enlightener and a poet. He requires education and the willingness to learn and experience new things with him."--Dieter Ronte 0Exhibition: Ludwig Museum, Koblenz, Germany (19.8.-28.10.2012)

The Cosmos Poems is about the universe, who it is, how it is, how it came to be, what is going to happen, when, why, who you are, what there was before it was, the smallest and the vastness, as told by a child to a child. In which quantum mechanics makes friends with special relativity forever. The poems by Frederick Seidel tell the story. The pictures by Anselm Kiefer tell the story

L'art survivra à ses ruines Die kunst geht knapp nicht unter by Anselm Kiefer( Book )

13 editions published between 2011 and 2013 in French and Undetermined and held by 83 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

P. [4] of cover
