Anselm Kiefer by Daniel Arasse( Book )

6 editions published between 2001 and 2014 in English and French and held by 768 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Anselm Kiefer (b. 1945) is one of the most important and controversial artists of the twentieth century. This book, the first to analyze the essence of his work, begins with Kiefer's arrival on the international art scene at the 1980 Venice Biennale, when he sparked heated debate and controversy over the "Germanity" of his pieces. Since that time, through such diverse mediums as painting, gouache and watercolor, photography, artist's books, engravings, installations, and sculpture, Kiefer has created a body of work that is protean, theatrical, monumental, or intimate, depending on the period. He has interpreted the great political and cultural issues at the heart of the modern European sensibility: the connections among memory, history, and mythology; war; the Holocaust; and ethnic and national identity."--Jacket
Summer by Karl Ove Knausgård( Book )

17 editions published between 2016 and 2019 in 4 languages and held by 659 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The grand finale of Karl Ove Knausgaard's masterful and intensely-personal series about the four seasons, illustrated with paintings by the great German artist Anselm Kiefer 2 June--It is completely dark out now. It is twenty-three minutes to midnight and you have already slept for four hours. What you will dream of tonight, no one will ever know. Even if you were to remember it when you wake up, you wouldn't have a language in which to communicate it to us, nor do I think that you quite understand what dreams are, I think that is still undefined for you, that your thoughts haven't grasped it yet, and that it therefore lies within that strange zone where it neither exists nor doesn't exist. The conclusion to one of the most extraordinary and original literary projects in recent years, Summer once again intersperses short vividly descriptive essays with emotionally-raw diary entries addressed directly to Knausgaard's newborn daughter. Writing more expansively and, if it is possible, even more intimately and unguardedly than in the previous three volumes, he mines with new depth his difficult memories of his childhood and fraught relationship with his own father. Documenting his family's life in rural Sweden and reflecting on a characteristically eclectic array of subjects--mosquitoes, barbeques, cynicism, and skin, to name just a few--he braids the various threads of the previous volumes into a moving conclusion. At his most voluminous since My Struggle, his epic sensational series, Knausgaard writes for his daughter, striving to make ready and give meaning to a world at once indifferent and achingly beautiful. In his hands, the overwhelming joys and insoluble pains of family and parenthood come alive with uncommon feeling"--

Anselm Kiefer : works on paper in the Metropolitan Museum of Art by Nan Rosenthal( Book )

14 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 535 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The highly regarded German artist Anselm Kiefer (b. 1945) began his career in the late 1960s, during a period when his country's intellectuals were involved in facing up to their nation's recent history - the Holocaust and the Nazi rape of Europe. Kiefer's work has continually dealt with these heretofore "taboo" subject matters, as well as with other elements of German culture and history, and it has effectively incorporated the provocative usage of both traditional and nontraditional materials." "Kiefer is best known for his very large works, and this publication provides an unusually detailed look at the least-known aspect of his oeuvre, his smaller works on paper. There are fifty-four works on paper in this volume, and they cover the years from 1969 to 1993. They entered the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1995. Fifty-one are in a great variety of media - watercolors, acrylics, and painted-over photographs, for example - and they are thought to represent about one-fourth of the unique works on paper that Kiefer created between 1969 and the end of the 1980s. The remaining three are very large works composed of numerous woodcuts made slightly earlier and mounted together. The entire group comprises a comprehensive sampling of Kiefer's talent for blending biting commentary and humor."--Jacket

Over your cities grass will grow by Sophie Fiennes( Visual )

11 editions published between 2010 and 2013 in 3 languages and held by 235 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In 1993, artist Anselm Kiefer left Buchen, Germany for La Ribaute, a derelict silk factory near Barjac, a town in the south of France. Like a strange, sprawling village, La Ribaute extends over 35 hectares and is composed of old industrial buildings and working studios. From 2000, Kiefer began constructing a series of elaborate installations and paintings, creating pavilions to house them, while also digging a network of tunnels underneath the pavilions. Over Your Cities Grass Will Grow takes you into Kiefer's artistic estate to discover these sights and more - including an underground pool at the cul-de-sac of a tubular iron tunnel embedded within a crypt, a 20-meter tiered concrete amphitheater, and an open landscape of concrete towers assembled like so many card houses. Traversing this landscape, director Sophie Fiennes' critically acclaimed film immerses the audience in the total world and creative process of one of today's most significant and inventive artists."--Container

Anselm Kiefer : Merkaba by Anselm Kiefer( Book )

5 editions published in 2006 in Italian and Undetermined and held by 156 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the chaos of Milan's swiftly-converting industrial quarter, one massive space has been set aside for contemporary art. Merkaba documents Hangar Bicocca's first installation, the seven title towers, from the prototype stage to installation by cranes and pulleys to the spotlight. Each precarious-looking spire of cement and lead boxes has a name of its own as well. "Falling Stars," "Sternenlager," "Die Sefiroth," "Tzim-Tzum," "Shevirat Ha-Kelim," "Tiqqun" and "The Seven Heavenly Palaces." Their towering silhouettes, some as many as 50 feet high, are as mystical as their titles suggest, but they also seem to make reference to all that is changing and staying the same in the city where they stand, home both to early sacred and secular towers and contemporary skyscrapers. Kiefer, known best for his reckonings with German history, proves that he can work the same alchemy elsewhere

The Cosmos Poems is about the universe, who it is, how it is, how it came to be, what is going to happen, when, why, who you are, what there was before it was, the smallest and the vastness, as told by a child to a child. In which quantum mechanics makes friends with special relativity forever. The poems by Frederick Seidel tell the story. The pictures by Anselm Kiefer tell the story
