National Science Education Standards observe, interact, change, learn by National Research Council (U.S.) ( )
18 editions published between 1994 and 2008 in English and held by 2,557 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Americans agree that our students urgently need better science education. The Standards offers a coherent vision of what it means to be scientifically literate, describing what all students should understand and be able to do in science. The volume reflects the principles that learning science is an inquiry-based process, that science in schools should reflect the intellectual traditions of contemporary science, and that all Americans have a role in science education reform
The sun to the earth--and beyond a decadal research strategy in solar and space physics by National Research Council (U.S.) ( )
6 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 2,461 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The sun is the source of energy for life on earth and is the strongest modulator of the human physical environment. In fact, the Sun's influence extends throughout the solar system, both through photons, which provide heat light, and ionization, and through the continuous outflow of a magnetized, supersonic ionized gas known as the solar wind. While the accomplishments of the past decade have answered important questions about the physics of the Sun, the interplanetary medium, and the space environments of Earth and other solar system bodies, they have also highlighted other questions, some of which are long-standing and fundamental. "The Sun to the Earth--and Beyond organizes these questions in terms of five challenges that are expected to be the focus of scientific investigations in solar and space physics during the coming decade and beyond
Ensuring safe food from production to consumption by Committee to Ensure Safe Food from Production to Consumption (U.S.) ( )
6 editions published between 1998 and 1999 in English and held by 2,049 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
How safe is our food supply? Each year one in every ten Americans has an illness caused by the food they consume. These food-borne illnesses are caused by pathogenic microorganisms, pesticide residues, food additives, and toxic chemicals naturally present in food and in the environment. Recent actions taken at the federal, state, and local levels in response to the increase in reported incidences of food-borne illnesses point to the need to evaluate the food safety system in the United States. This book assesses the effectiveness of the current food safety system and provides recommendations on changes needed to ensure an effective science-based food safety system. Food Safety discusses such important issues as: What are the primary hazards associated with the food supply? What gaps exist in the current system for ensuring a safe food supply? What effects do trends in food consumption have on food safety? What is the impact of food preparation and handling practices in the home, in food services,or in production operations on the risk of food-borne illnesses? What organizational changes in responsibility or oversight could be made to increase the effectiveness of the food safety system? The committee discusses the current trends in risks associated with microbiological, chemical, and physical hazards. The book also considers how changes in technology and food processing might introduce new risks. It is vitally important to determine the most effective structure of responsibility to ensure consumer safety. To that end, the committee makes recommendations on steps for developing a coordinated, unified system for food safety as well as recommendations on the additional research needed.Food Safety will be important for policy-makers, food trade professionals, food producers, food processors, food researchers, public health professionals, and consumers

Integrity in scientific research creating an environment that promotes responsible conduct by Committee on Assessing Integrity in Research Environments (U.S.) ( )
5 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 1,815 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Considerable effort has been devoted to the task of defining research misconduct and elaborating methods and for investigating allegations of misconduct. Much less attention has been devoted, however, to the task of fostering a research environment that promotes integrity. Integrity in Scientific Research focuses on the research environment and attempts to define and describe those elements that enable unique individuals to act with integrity

Monoclonal antibody production by Institute of Laboratory Animal Resources (U.S.) ( )
2 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 1,602 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The American Anti-Vivisection Society (AAVS) petitioned the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in early 1997 to prohibit the use of an animal in the production of mAb (monoclonal antibodies). NIH responded late in 1997, asserting that continued use of the mouse method for producing mAb was scientifically required. In a second petition, in early 1998, AAVS did not accept the NIH response. NIH asked the National Research Council to form a committee to study this issue. The Committee on Methods of Producing Monoclonal Antibodies was composed of 11 experts with extensive experience in biomedical research, laboratory animal medicine, pain research, animal welfare, and patient advocacy. The committee was asked to determine whether there is a scientific necessity for producing mAb by the mouse method and, if so, to recommend ways to minimize any pain or distress that might be associated with the method. The committee was also to determine whether there are regulatory requirements for the mouse method and to summarize the current stage of development of tissue-culture methods
