Pierre Bonnard's art is the expression of his unbridled delight in ordinary, daily life. The world his work evokes is one of cozy rooms suffused with light, of tender family presences, of nudes stepping in and out of the bath, of amiable and adored cats and floppy Parisian dogs. His interiors have an inviting glow--tables are always laden with fruit, doors and windows are open, and lush and heady landscapes spill forth. Bonnard painted a land of bounty and sensuous enchantment. Born in 1867 to a well-to-do family near Paris, Bonnard was very much part of the cultured bourgeoisie--wry, urbane, and fond of domestic comforts. Initially associated with the group of painters known as the Nabis, who were interested in oriental motifs, mysticism, and the art of Paul Gauguin, Bonnard became influenced by Japanese prints. Like the Japanese artists whose work he admired, Bonnard tended to emphasize line and color over modeling and depth, and to abolish any hierarchy among his subjects. In his paintings, a kitchen pot is as likely to be the focus of attention as is a person, and often his most successful works revolve around a simple ornamental detail: the patterns in a dress or the stripes on a blouse, the scattered flowers on a wallpaper, or the checks of a tablecloth. It is precisely this ability to infuse even the most commonplace object with such vivid personality that sets Bonnard apart--that and his work's inimitable charm and playfulness.--
Pierre Bonnard : photographs and paintings by Françoise Heilbrun( Book )

7 editions published in 1988 in English and Undetermined and held by 422 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The first collection of the photographs of master Impressionist painter Pierre Bonnard, this work of scholarship documents the existing oeuvre of Bonnard's work, from delicate nature studies and landscapes in his native France and elsewhere in Euriope, to striking portraiture and intimate images of lovers, friends and family. The more than 276 photographs and illustrations, demonstrate the range and genius of Bonnard's work, and offer insights into his process as an artist. Bonnard's photographs wre the inspiration for several of his well-known works, among them the illustrations fro Parallèlemnt by Verlaine (1900) and Daphnis and Chloé by Longus (1902). The texts and critical annotations make important connections between Bonnard's photographs and his drawings and paintings
Pierre Bonnard : early and late by Elizabeth Hutton Turner( Book )

14 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 418 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This major presentation of the work of Pierre Bonnard follows a new line of enquiry reconciling what has previously been seen as two distinct early and creative periods: the Nabis or symbolist Bonnard and the later so-called Impressionist or colorist Bonnard. By uniting representative works from all periods of Bonnard's life, this book charts the artist's singular pathway and illustrates his highly independent artistic vision. The 130 works illustrated here, including paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, and sculpture, show that Bonnard continually experimented with alternative media and drew from a range of sources, both Eastern and Western."--Page 4 of cover

Bonnard and the Nabis by A. G Kostenevich( Book )

5 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 188 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Pierre Bonnard was the leader of a group of post-impressionist painters who called themselves the Nabis, from the Hebrew word meaning 'prophet'. Bonnard, Vuillard, Roussel and Denis, the most distinguished of the Nabis, revolutionized the spirit of decorative techniques during one of the richest periods in the history of French painting. Influenced by Odilon Redon and Puvis de Chavanne, by popular imagery and Japanese etchings, this post-impressionist group was above all a close circle of friends who shared the same cultural background and interests. An increasing individualism in their art of

Interpreting Bonnard : color and light by Nicholas Watkins( Book )

5 editions published between 1997 and 1998 in English and held by 160 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Pierre Bonnard was a very private painter who confined his subject matter to his wife, his homes, the surrounding countryside, and his self-portraits." "This book provides a concise review of Bonnard's life, key works, and the development of his technique, which began with early work done chiefly in tone, then led to gradual color-enrichment and, finally, to the mastery of light suffusion. Author Nicholas Watkins presents the artist not as a sentimental survivor of Impressionism, as he was often labeled, but as a highly demanding formal artist who transformed light into an emotional atmosphere enveloping the surface within which objects exist."--Jacket
