The art and science of classroom assessment : the missing part of pedagogy by Susan M Brookhart( Book )

2 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 666 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This digest addresses the importance of and the methods used to assess the performance of college students. Following a definition of "assessment," the digest considers: (1) why classroom assessment of students' achievement is important; (2) how an instructor can ensure the quality of information from classroom assessments; (3) methods of assessment particularly suited to various achievement targets; (4) how the results of several assessments can be meaningfully combined into one composite grade; (5) ways for faculty to improve assessment skills; and (6) conclusions about assessment from a review of the literature. It is concluded that the relatively few empirical studies of classroom assessment in higher education underscore the importance of instructor fairness, clarity in tests, assignments, and scoring, and clear descriptions of the achievement targets or learning goals in higher education classrooms. The changing nature of the academic deanship by Mimi Wolverton( Book )

3 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 377 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This digest considers four questions about the academic deanship. The first is what are deans and what do they do? The position of dean did not gain universal acceptance in U.S. higher education until 1913. Deans continue to be predominantly white and male, and are generally in their mid-fifties. Strong scholarly credentials distinguish most deans, but the ambiguity of the position they hold, being concerned with students and a wide array of administrative tasks, raises their levels of work-related stress. A second question involves the challenges deans face, with include financial constraints, shifting demographics and increasing diversity of students, demands from the corporate sector, and advances in technology. The third question concerns the strategies deans might use to meet the challenges of higher education today. Deans should use strategies that move them from being managers of day-to-day operations to being leaders in a dynamic environment. Some specific suggestions are offered to enable deans to cope with contemporary challenges, including those of student diversity. A final question asks what universities can do to help deans become more effective. (Contains 15 references.) (SLD)
Posttenure faculty development : building a system for faculty improvement and appreciation by Jeffrey W Alstete( Book )

2 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 364 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book examines the debate around posttenure review and suggests a model for faculty development that combines posttenure review with faculty assessment and development. The book addresses issues such as: what is faculty development; types of posttenure faculty development programs; designing development strategies; and what are the implications of choosing to develop faculty. Section titles include: (1) "Why Is Development of Tenured Faculty a Concern?" (posttenure review, need for posttenure faculty development); (2) "How Has Higher Education Responded to This Concern?" (history/roots of faculty development, models of faculty development, faculty development and posttenure review); (3) "Posttenure Faculty Development in Action" (optional posttenure programs, required posttenure faculty development, jointly sponsored programs); (4) "Designing Development Programs for Tenured Faculty" (recommendations and tools, assessment of development programs, nondeveloping tenured faculty). A concluding section suggests that posttenure faculty development should not be linked directly with the formal posttenure review process; instead, it suggests a comprehensive system of optional development opportunities, with annual development plans that combine merit pay and strong administrative leadership to ensure that improvement activities reach all tenured faculty. Appendixes include a resource section, example of a program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and sample guidelines for a faculty development plan. (Contains approximately 180 references.) (CH)

Formal recognition of employer-sponsored instruction : conflict and collegiality in postsecondary education by Nancy S Nash( Book )

3 editions published between 1987 and 1988 in English and held by 339 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The extensive education and training programs established and run by business and industry for their own employees are discussed. The extent of corporate education is assessed with attention to cost, participation, providers, curricula, methods of instruction, organization, evaluation, and corporate colleges. Historical developments concerning employer-sponsored instruction are traced, and it is suggested that there is no longer a sharp distinction between corporate training and collegiate education. Some corporate colleges were begun by companies to educate specialists for their industrial needs. For traditional education, a degree-granting institution must receive recognition from the state, and there is also program and course recognition and licensing of individuals from accredited programs. Ways that corporate-sponsored education is extended legal recognition are identified, along with reasons that corporations seek recognition and issues involving accreditation. It is noted that a significant factor affecting the growth of corporate education is the growth of technology. Implications of expanding recognized corporate education are addressed, along with opportunities for research about corporate education. (SW)
