The five papers in this issue are reports on research topics chosen by graduate students selected for awards from a nationwide competition under the fifth (1990-1991) Graduate Research Award Program on Public-Sector Aviation Issues. This program is sponsored by the Federal Aviation Administration and administered by the Transportation Research Board (TRB). Its purpose is to stimulate thought, discussion, and research by those who may become the future managers and policy makers in aviation. The papers were presented at the 71st TRB Annual Meeting in January 1992

Going the distance : the safe transport of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste in the United States by Committee on Transportation of Radioactive Waste( Book )

5 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 189 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This new report from the National Research Council's Nuclear and Radiation Studies Board (NRSB) and the Transportation Research Board reviews the risks and technical and societal concerns for the transport of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste in the United States. Shipments are expected to increase as the U.S. Department of Energy opens a repository for spent fuel and high-level waste at Yucca Mountain, and the commercial nuclear industry considers constructing a facility in Utah for temporary storage of spent fuel from some of its nuclear waste plants. The report concludes that there are no fundamental technical barriers to the safe transport of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive and the radiological risks of transport are well understood and generally low. However, there are a number of challenges that must be addressed before large-quantity shipping programs can be implemented successfully. Among these are managing "social" risks. The report does not provide an examination of the security of shipments against malevolent acts but recommends that such an examination be carried out
Effectiveness and impact of corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards by Committee on the Effectiveness and Impact of Corporate Average Fuel Economy CAFE Standards Staff National Research Council( Book )

2 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 157 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The National Academy Press, based in Washington, D.C., presents the full text of a book entitled "Effectiveness and Impact of Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) Standards," authored by the Transportation Research Board and originally published in 2001. The Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) program requires automobile manufacturers to increase the sales-weighted average fuel economy of the passenger car and light-duty truck fleets sold in the United States. The book highlights technologies for improving the fuel economy, the impact of a more fuel efficient fleet, and potential modifications and alternatives to CAFE
Review of the research program of the FreedomCar and fuel partnership( Book )

4 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 153 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The purpose of this independent review is to provide candid and critical comments that will assist the institution in making its published report as sound as possible and to ensure that the report meets institutional standards for objectivity, evidence, and responsiveness to the study charge. This is a broad, very challenging research effort to assist in the development of high-risk technologies that will enable the vision of a clean and sustainable transportation energy future
Spills of emulsified fuels : risks and response( Book )

2 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 125 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Spills of Emulsified Fuels: Risks and Response is part of an evolving body of work conducted by the National Research Council (NRC) to help inform debate and decision-making regarding the ecological consequences of releases associated with the widespread use of fossil fuels. Like earlier NRC reports, it attempts to understand the chemical, physical, and biological behavior of a complex mix of compounds that make up various petroleum hydrocarbon-based fuels. The specific risk factors presented by emulsified fuels are difficult to characterize, mainly because there have been no spills of emulsified fuels to date, and thus there is little practical experience with these products

Advancing aeronautical safety : a review of NASA's aviation safety-related research programs by National Research Council (U.S.)( Book )

2 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 71 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Advancing the state of aviation safety is a central mission of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Congress requested this review of NASA's aviation safety-related research programs, seeking an assessment of whether the programs have well-defined, prioritized, and appropriate research objectives; whether resources have been allocated appropriately among these objectives; whether the programs are well coordinated with the safety research programs of the Federal Aviation Administration; and whether suitable mechanisms are in place for transitioning the research results into operational technologies and procedures and certification activities in a timely manner. Advancing Aeronautical Safety contains findings and recommendations with respect to each of the main aspects of the review sought by Congress. These findings indicate that NASA's aeronautics research enterprise has made, and continues to make, valuable contributions to aviation system safety but it is falling short and needs improvement in some key respects"--Publisher's description

Overcoming barriers to deployment of plug-in electric vehicles by National Research Council (U.S.)( Book )

3 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 44 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In the past few years, interest in plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) has grown. Advances in battery and other technologies, new federal standards for carbon-dioxide emissions and fuel economy, state zero-emission-vehicle requirements, and the current administration's goal of putting millions of alternative-fuel vehicles on the road have all highlighted PEVs as a transportation alternative. Consumers are also beginning to recognize the advantages of PEVs over conventional vehicles, such as lower operating costs, smoother operation, and better acceleration; the ability to fuel up at home; and zero tailpipe emissions when the vehicle operates solely on its battery. There are, however, barriers to PEV deployment, including the vehicle cost, the short all-electric driving range, the long battery charging time, uncertainties about battery life, the few choices of vehicle models, and the need for a charging infrastructure to support PEVs. What should industry do to improve the performance of PEVs and make them more attractive to consumers? At the request of Congress, Overcoming Barriers to Deployment of Plug-in Electric Vehicles identifies barriers to the introduction of electric vehicles and recommends ways to mitigate these barriers. This report examines the characteristics and capabilities of electric vehicle technologies, such as cost, performance, range, safety, and durability, and assesses how these factors might create barriers to widespread deployment. Overcoming Barriers to Deployment of Plug-in Electric Vehicles provides an overview of the current status of PEVs and makes recommendations to spur the industry and increase the attractiveness of this promising technology for consumers. Through consideration of consumer behaviors, tax incentives, business models, incentive programs, and infrastructure needs, this book studies the state of the industry and makes recommendations to further its development and acceptance."--Publisher's description
Issues in commuting and pilot fatigue : interim report by National Research Council (U.S.)( Book )

2 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 39 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The potential for fatigue to negatively affect human performance is well established. Concern about this potential in the aviation context extends back decades, with both airlines and pilots agreeing that fatigue is a safety concern. A more recent consideration is whether and how pilot commuting, conducted in a pilot's off-duty time, may affect fatigue. The National Academy of Sciences was asked to review available information related to the prevalence and characteristics of pilot commuting; sleep, fatigue, and circadian rhythms; airline and regulatory oversight policies; and pilot and airline practices. This interim report summarizes the committee's review to date of the available information. The final report will present a final review, along with the committee's conclusions and recommendations based on the information available during its deliberations. --
