Metamorphoses : the Arthur Golding translation, 1567 by Ovid( Book )

14 editions published between 1965 and 2000 in English and held by 905 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From the Dust Jacket: Arthur Golding's translation of the Metamorphoses is "the most beautiful book in the language"--So Ezra Pound has been assuring us for half a century. It is certainly true that from the time of its publication in 1567 until a decade after the death of Shakespeare it was the English Ovid: one of the most popular and influential books during the greatest period of our literature. Four hundred years later, it still has more verve and gusto, is more plain fun to read, than any other version in English. The two hundred and fifty stories of the Metamorphoses-some only a few lines long, some several hundred-involve the theme of transformation. They show us men and women-as a reward, as a punishment, as an escape-becoming animal or vegetable or mineral, or in a few cases even decorations in outer space. There are many tones, from the homely sweetness of Philemon and Baucis to the frenzy of Myrrha's incestuous love for her father; from the little idyll of Pan and Syrinx to the rape and cannibalism of Philomela's tragedy-of which T.S. Eliot has made a key symbol in The Waste Land. Moving at breathless speed, thanks largely to "dissolves" not unlike those of surrealist cinema, the episodes range from the very beginning of the world to a famous political assassination of the poet's own day. This edition makes available for the first time in an inexpensive modern edition the complete text of Golding's 1567 original. For the first time too we have the long-needed and long-desired footnotes on unfamiliar words, together with an identifying index of names and places. By way of introduction, Mr. Nims has written a lively and informative study of the Metamorphoses and its history, of Ovid's artistry as poet and Golding's as translator, and indeed of the whole problem of translating poetry, so much discussed today in and outside the universities

The complete poems of Michelangelo by Michelangelo Buonarroti( Book )

12 editions published between 1998 and 2014 in English and held by 743 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Michelangelo studied and wrote poetry throughout his life, frequently turning to it in times of emotional crisis or stress. His finest literary efforts are often allied with the masterworks of his visual art. As he labored in the Sistine Chapel with visions of the Last Judgment, he composed a series of passionate love sonnets. And while struggling, near the end of his life, to complete his final Piet̀a, he worked at religious poems anguished in their fervor. Indeed, the power of his verse seemed to grow with age, as if compensating for his diminishing physical strength." "Nims, an eminent poet in his own right, has translated the entire body of Michelangelo's poetry, from the artist's ardent twenties to his anguished and turbulent eighties."--Jacket
