Stonedial by
György Konrád(
Book
)
21 editions published between 1994 and 2014 in 5 languages and held by 377 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The year 1993. Janos Dragomn, a wandering scholar, a world-famous and world-weary Hungarian writer, returns to his native town to visit three old friends. They are Aba Kuno, the almost saintly, highly respected rector of the university; Antal Tombor, the charismatic popular showman-mayor; and Kobra, a stable family man who is also a ubiquitous media pundit dispensing "common sense." The three have wives, all eager to be seduced by Dragomn, whose reputation precedes him. Through a series of flashbacks, covering his intellectually and sexually precocious schooldays, his memories of the life of Jews in 1944, and the 1956 Revolution (brilliantly rendered), we learn that Dragomn inadvertently caused the massacre of six young colleagues. Through the turbulent history of a Central European country, Konrd explores familiar themes and delivers a universal, appropriately ambiguous, message. 6 X 9

The invisible voice : meditations on Jewish themes by
György Konrád(
Book
)
7 editions published between 1999 and 2000 in English and held by 259 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Written over the last two decades, the essays in this collection speak to what it means to be Jewish - historically, theologically, ideologically, philosophically - within the context of the Holocaust and the disintegration of Communism. George Konrad is Hungarian and Jewish. He is European and Jewish. A Diaspora Jew, he espouses Zionism, he tells us, as one who might, if he chooses, move to Jerusalem, just as he might, if he chooses, move to Paris." "Konrad covers much ground in The Invisible Voice, from German collective guilt to assimilation, from the Diaspora Jew to Israel and Palestine. He looks at European integration and how the Jews fit into it. Should they work toward assimilation or separation in order to survive? These are thoughtful and provocative essays from one of Europe's preeminent essayists and novelists."--Jacket

Revolution in Hungary : the 1956 Budapest uprising by
Erich Lessing(
Book
)
7 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 152 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"On October 23, 1956, what began as a mass rally in Budapest quickly evolved into the Hungarian Revolution. Within days, millions of Hungarians were supporting the revolt. It lasted until November 4th, when it was crushed by the Hungarian police and Soviet tanks and artillery. Thousands of Hungarian rebels and Soviet soldiers were killed and injured, and nearly a quarter of a million people fled the country." "Erich Lessing was the first photographer to arrive in Hungary, and he documented the short-lived uprising and its aftermath in a series of photographs, reproduced here in stunning duotone. These world-famous images bring to life once more the hope and euphoria of the first days of the revolt, so soon to be followed by its brutal suppression."--Jacket
