Categories and sheaves
by
Masaki Kashiwara(
)
23 editions published between 2005 and 2011 in English and held by 686 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Categories and sheaves, which emerged in the middle of the last century as an enrichment for the concepts of sets and functions, appear almost everywhere in mathematics nowadays. This book covers categories, homological algebra and sheaves in a systematic and exhaustive manner starting from scratch, and continues with full proofs to an exposition of the most recent results in the literature, and sometimes beyond. The authors present the general theory of categories and functors, emphasising inductive and projective limits, tensor categories, representable functors, indobjects and localization. Then they study homological algebra including additive, abelian, triangulated categories and also unbounded derived categories using transfinite induction and accessible objects. Finally, sheaf theory as well as twisted sheaves and stacks appear in the framework of Grothendieck topologies

Sheaves on manifolds

Masaki Kashiwara(

)
22 editions published between 1990 and 2010 in 4 languages and held by 453 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
From the reviews: This book is devoted to the study of sheaves by microlocal methods..(it) may serve as a reference source as well as a textbook on this new subject. Houzel's historical overview of the development of sheaf theory will identify important landmarks for students and will be a pleasure to read for specialists. Math. Reviews 92a (1992). The book is clearly and precisely written, and contains many interesting ideas: it describes a whole, largely new branch of mathematics.(...)The book can be strongly recommended to a younger mathematician enthusiastic to assimilate a new range of techniques allowing flexible application to a wide variety of problems. Bull. L.M.S. (1992)

Physical combinatorics

14 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 258 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This work is concerned with combinatorial aspects arising in the theory of exactly solvable models and representation theory. Recent developments in integrable models reveal an unexpected link between representation theory and statistical mechanics through combinatorics. For example, Young tableaux, which describe the basis of irreducible representations, appear in the Bethe Ansatz method in quantum spin chains as labels for the eigenstates of Hamiltonians."

Topological field theory, primitive forms and related topics
by
Masaki Kashiwara(
Book
)
14 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 235 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
As the interaction of mathematics and theoretical physics continues to intensify, the theories developed in mathematics are being applied to physics, and conversely. This book centers around the theory of primitive forms which currently plays an active and key role in topological field theory (theoretical physics), but was originally developed as a mathematical notion to define a "good period mapping" for a family of analytic structures. The invited papers in this volume are expository in nature by participants of the Taniguchi Symposium on "Topological Field Theory, Primitive Forms and Related Topics" and the RIMS Symposium bearing the same title, both held in Kyoto. The papers reflect the broad research of some of the world's leading mathematical physicists, and should serve as an excellent resource for researchers as well as graduate students of both disciplines
