Paratexts : thresholds of interpretation by
Gérard Genette(
)
92 editions published between 1987 and 2016 in 6 languages and held by 2,477 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Paratexts are those liminal devices and conventions, both within and outside the book, that form part of the complex mediation between book, author, publisher, and reader: titles, forewords, epigraphs, and publishers' jacket copy are part of a book's private and public history. In Paratexts, an English translation of Seuils, Gerard Genette shows how the special pragmatic status of paratextual declarations requires a carefully calibrated analysis of their illocutionary force. With clarity, precision, and an extraordinary range of reference, Paratexts constitutes an encyclopedic survey of the customs and institutions of the Republic of Letters as they are revealed in the borderlands of the text. Genette presents a global view of these liminal mediations and the logic of their relation to the reading public by studying each element as a literary function. Richard Macksey's foreword describes how the poetics of paratexts interacts with more general questions of literature as a cultural institution, and situates Genette's work in contemporary literary theory."--Jacket

Narrative discourse revisited by
Gérard Genette(
Book
)
48 editions published between 1983 and 2010 in 4 languages and held by 1,187 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In Narrative Discourse Revisited Genette both answers critics of the earlier work and provides a better-defined, richer, and more systematic view of narrative form and functioning. This book not only clarifies some of the more complex issues in the study of narrative but also provides a vivid tableau of the development of narratology over the decade between the two works

Narrative discourse : an essay in method by
Gérard Genette(
Book
)
43 editions published between 1979 and 2002 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,085 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Genette uses Proust's Remembrance of Things Past as a work to identify and name the basic constituents and techniques of narrative. Genette illustrates the examples by referring to other literary works. His systemic theory of narrative deals with the structure of fiction, including fictional devices that go unnoticed and whose implications fulfill the Western narrative tradition

The architext : an introduction by
Gérard Genette(
Book
)
43 editions published between 1978 and 2014 in 5 languages and held by 805 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In this essential theoretical essay, Gerard Genette asserts that the object of poetics is not the text, but the architext--the transcendent categories (literary genres, modes of enunciation, and types of discourse, among others) to which each individual text belongs. In seeking to link these categories in a system embracing the entire field of literature, Western poetics has divided literature into three kinds: dramatic, epic, and lyric. This division, generally accepted since the eighteenth century, has been wrongly attributed to Aristotle with great detriment to the development of poetics. Here Genette disassembles this burdensome triad by retracing its gradual construction and distinguishes among the architextual categories that this division has long obscured. In so doing, Genette lays a firm foundation for future theorists of literary forms

Palimpsestes : la littérature au second degré by
Gérard Genette(
Book
)
45 editions published between 1962 and 2007 in 3 languages and held by 761 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Principaux auteurs abordés: Joyce, Proust, Thomas Mann. Puissant. [SDM]

Palimpsests : literature in the second degree by
Gérard Genette(
Book
)
16 editions published between 1982 and 1997 in English and French and held by 594 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"By definition, a palimpsest is "a written document, usually on vellum or parchment, that has been written upon several times, often with remnants of erased writing still visible." Palimpsests (originally published in France in 1982), one of Gerard Genette's most important works, examines the manifold relationships a text may have with prior texts. Genette describes the multiple ways a later text asks readers to read or remember an earlier one. In this regard, he treats the history and nature of parody, antinovels, pastiches, caricatures, commentary, allusion, imitations, and other textual relations."--Jacket

Mimologiques : voyage en Cratylie by
Gérard Genette(
Book
)
23 editions published between 1976 and 1999 in French and held by 495 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
-- From http://www.jstor.org (Jan. 21, 2016)

Mimologics = Mimologiques : voyage en Cratylie by
Gérard Genette(
Book
)
9 editions published between 1994 and 1995 in English and Undetermined and held by 378 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Do words--their sounds and shapes, their lengths and patterns--imitate the world? Mimology says they do. First argued in Plato's Cratylus more than two thousand years ago, mimology has left an important mark in virtually every major art and artistic theory thereafter. Mimology is the basis of language sciences and incites occasional hilarity. Genette treats matters as basic and staid as the alphabet and as reverberating as the letter R in ur-linguistics. Mimologics bridges mainstream literary history and Genette's expertise in critical method by undertaking an intensive study of the most vexed of literary problems: language as a representation of reality. --From publisher's description

Die Erzählung by
Gérard Genette(
Book
)
22 editions published between 1994 and 2010 in German and Undetermined and held by 297 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
