The creeds of Christendom : with a history and critical notes by Philip Schaff( Book )

"In 1876, this three volume collection of cross-denominational creeds was deemed by its publisher a "symbolical library" well worth visiting. In Volume I, Schaff introduces the creeds by providing general information regarding their origin, value, authority, and classification. First, Schaff presents the Ecumenical Creeds, which contain the most basic doctrines of the Trinity and the Incarnation. These fundamental creeds are the Apostle's Creed, the Nicene Creed, the Creed of Chalcedon, and the Athanasian Creed. Next, Schaff considers the Greek and Roman Creeds, which differ significantly from Protestantism and from each other. Schaff then explores the Evangelical Protestant Creeds, which emerged around the time of the Reformation and are divided into two camps, Reformed and Lutheran. Schaff concludes by giving some attention to the Creeds of Modern Evangelical Denominations. In Volume II of Creeds of Christendom, Schaff reproduces the Scripture Confessions as well as the Ante-Nicene and Nicene Rules of Faith and Baptismal Creeds. He also presents the Orthodox Confession of the Eastern Church alongside the longer catechism of the Orthodox Eastern Church. Finally, Schaff concludes with the Old Catholic Union Creeds, which include several encyclical letters from the 19th and 20th century papacies. Schaff spends several sections comparing different forms of the Apostle's Creed, which range from the Old Roman African form to the Old Italian form. Schaff even provides an extensive table displaying the gradual formation of the Creed from 200AD to 750AD. This book is an excellent resource for comparative analysis, as Schaff provides the documents in their original languages alongside their English translations. Volume III is dedicated to the Lutheran, Anglican, Calvinistic, and later Protestant Confessions of Faith. Schaff's third volume is the first publication to compile the Modern Protestant Creeds, a rare group of documents containing the Congregational, Baptist, and Presbyterian Confessions. It also includes the Quaker Confession, the Easter Litany of the Moravians, and the Methodist Articles of Religion. This book is an excellent resource for comparative analysis, as Schaff provides the documents in their original languages alongside their English translations. Through Creeds of Christendom, Schaff aims to bring understanding to those who adhere to different creeds. He wisely reminds us that despite varying Christian denominations, Christ always remains at the center of the creeds"--Amazon.com

The principle of Protestantism by Philip Schaff( Book )

19 editions published between 1845 and 2012 in English and German and held by 371 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This series is the first modern edition of the main body of Mercersburg theology. It includes all the important works, large and small, of John W. Nevin, Philip Schaff, and lesser Mercersburg figures, covering the significant doctrines and issues of the movement. Each volume includes critical or explanatory notes, relevant introductions, and bibliographies of modern works. With few exceptions, the early texts are reproduced in unabridged form. Since the original Mercersburg materials are now extremely scarce, and almost impossible to assemble in their entirety, the Lancaster Series forms an invaluable resource for historians of American Christianity and, in particular, for serious students of theology. It will commend itself to all those who wish to understand the nineteenth-century background of contemporary Protestantism. Both of the Mercersburg theologians, Schaff and Nevin, looked forward to a new age of the church - an age which would call into unity and catholicity all the divisions of the body of Christ
The New Testament in the original Greek by Brooke Foss Westcott( Book )

32 editions published between 1870 and 1898 in 3 languages and held by 346 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The publication in 1881 of The New Testament in the Original Greek, by the Cambridge scholars Brooke Foss Westcott (1825-1901) and Fenton John Anthony Hort (1828-1892), marked the culmination of twenty-eight years of work and revolutionised the theory and methods of New Testament textual criticism. The editors broke with tradition and reconstructed a critical text based on the third-century uncial manuscripts Codex Vaticanus and Codex Sinaiticus, paving the way for future editions. Westcott and Hort's claim to reconstruct the 'original text' may seem extravagant today; but according to Bruce Metzger theirs was the 'most noteworthy critical edition of the Greek Testament ever produced by British scholarship'. This second volume contains the reconstructed text. Readings that the editors thought were possible contenders for the original are printed in the margin; other readings, judged to be of value but appearing later, are given in the appendix
