Parsifal by Richard Wagner( )

820 editions published between 1925 and 2018 in 9 languages and held by 9,559 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The mystical enchantment of Wagner's last opera means it has special place in the hearts of opera lovers. On the surface, it's the story of Parsifal's quest to restore the Holy Grail. But for many listeners it is also a profound inner journey that takes them to a unique place. James Levine's conducting of the work has become legendary, and our all-star cast, with Plácido Domingo in the title role, is on the same exalted plane. Violeta Urmana is the temptress Kundry and Ekkehard Wlaschiha is the evil magician Klingsor

Die Walküre by Richard Wagner( )

915 editions published between 1899 and 2017 in 8 languages and held by 9,455 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Wagner's drama of overwhelming love and devastating loss has seldom been so vividly brought to life as with this all-star cast of great singing actors. The electrifying combination of Jon Vickers and Leonie Rysanek, as twins who fall in love, is legendary. Birgit Nilsson, the defining Brünnhilde of her generation, gives one of her most touching performances as the daughter of a god who cannot withstand the power of human love. With the great Christa Ludwig as Fricka, and Thomas Stewart's gripping portrayal of Wotan, the unraveling god, this is not to be missed

Mignon Dunn is the dark and malevolent Ortrud who poisons the couple's happiness, with some help from her husband, Telramund (Donald McIntyre). James Levine leads the Met orchestra, bringing out the shimmer and the thunder of the score, along with every shade of expression in between

Under James Levine's thrilling direction the famous Met Orchestra is at its best in this first installment of Wagner's Ring cycle. From the dark, mysterious beginning in the depths of the Rhine River to the blazing end as the gods cross the rainbow bridge into their new home of Valhalla, this is a searing performance. James Morris is the commanding Wotan, the god who thinks he has everything under control, even as he unwittingly sows the seeds of his own destruction

Siegfried by Richard Wagner( )

646 editions published between 1929 and 2019 in 8 languages and held by 6,727 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is one of the legendary performances from the Met's vast archive of historic broadcasts. The incomparable Lauritz Melchior stars in the title role of the young hero who sets out to explore the world--killing the fierce dragon Fafner (Eduard Habich) and the evil dwarf Mime (Karl Laufkötter) along the way. When Wotan (the great Friedrich Schorr) tries to stop him, Siegfried uses his sword to break the god's spear and makes his way to the sleeping Brünnhilde (a radiant Kirsten Flagstad). He awakens her with a kiss--and sets in motion the events that, in the following opera, will bring about the end of the world. Kerstin Thorborg co-stars as Erda and Artur Bodanzky conducts

The mastersingers of Nuremberg = Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg by Richard Wagner( Book )

647 editions published between 1800 and 2017 in 13 languages and held by 3,265 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This opera has been described as "the longest single smile in the German language". But Roland Matthews indicates that violence is not far beneath the surface of this portrait of medieval Nuremberg. Arnold Whittall's analysis gives a bird's-eye view of the complexity of the score. Timothy McFarland explores the significance of the choice of subject: that nostalgia for a pre-industrial community, which was a symptom of the German nationalist movement. The long text has many subtleties which opera audiences can hardly appreciate without reading it, and the musical themes are numbered to indicate

Richard Wagner's Beethoven (1870) by Richard Wagner( )

200 editions published between 1820 and 2017 in 7 languages and held by 2,787 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Despite the enormous and accelerating worldwide interest in Wagner leading to the bicentenary of his birth in 2013, his prose writings have received scant scholarly attention. Wagner's book-length essay on Beethoven, written to celebrate the centenary of Beethoven's birth in 1870, is really about Wagner himself rather than Beethoven. It is generally regarded as the principal aesthetic statement of the composer's later years, representing a reassessment ofthe ideas of the earlier Zurich writings, especially Oper und Drama, in the light of the experience gained through the composition of Tristan und Isolde, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and the greater part of DerRing des Nibelungen. It contains Wagner's most complete exegesis of his understanding of Schopenhauer's philosophy and its perceived influence on the compositional practice of his later works. The essay also influenced the young Nietzsche. It is an essential text in the teaching of not only Wagnerian thought but also late nineteenth-century musical aesthetics in general. Until now the English reader with no access to the German original has been obliged to work from two Victorian translations. This brand new edition gives the German original and the newly translated English text on facing pages. It comes along with a substantial introduction placing the essay not onlywithin the wider historical and intellectual context of Wagner's later thought but also in the political context of the establishment of the German Empire in the 1870s. The translation is annotated throughout with a full bibliography. Richard Wagner's Beethoven will be indispensable reading for historians and musicologists as well as those interested in Wagner's philosophy and the aesthetics of music. -- Amazon.com
