Thinking is form : the drawings of Joseph Beuys by Ann Temkin( Book )

7 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 308 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Thinking Is Form breaks through the mass of obscure writing about Joseph Beuys to introduce this legendary artist in a simple and clear manner, through his utterly individual drawings. The subject of a major touring exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and The Art Institute of Chicago, Beuys's drawings are used here as the springboard for discussions of his life, art, and ideas. Some employ such unconventional mediums as hare's blood or margarine, or use the backs of envelopes or commercial stationery

The felt hat : Joseph Beuys, a life told by Lucrezia De Domizio Durini( Book )

12 editions published between 1991 and 1997 in English and Italian and held by 263 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"From the beginning of the Sixties until his death, Joseph Beuys (Krefeld, Germany, 1921 - Dusseldorf, 1986) dominated the contemporary avant-garde art scene. After participating in the Fluxus group's first exhibitions, he channeled his efforts into performance and political, social, and ecological projects. He founded cultural movements such as the Union for the New Democracy and the Free International University. Many of his conceptual propositions are memorable through their slogans: "All Men are Artists", "Kunst = Kapital", "We are the Revolution", "Defense of Nature."" "A participant in the most prestigious international exhibitions, from Kassel's "Documenta" to the Venice Biennial, Beuys also has important retrospective in 1979 at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. The artist's works are exhibited in the world's major museums." "The anti-traditionalist ideas of Beuysian art aim to renew and improve the manner in which man lives. The German master's prophetic beliefs establish him as an emblematic figure as one of the forerunners in the post-war art world."--Jacket
Rodin Beuys by Auguste Rodin( Book )

7 editions published in 2005 in German and English and held by 193 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Next to Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Auguste Rodin was among the sculptors that Joseph Beuys, up to his death in 1986, most highly prized. Beuys became aware of the great sculptor as early as 1950 when he read the monograph by Rainer Maria Rilke on Rodin's work, which provided him with crucial aesthetic impulses. Beuys' early drawings show thematic and conceptual connections to Rodin's watercolors and drawings. For instance, both artists refer back to ancient mythology, e.g., in their female figures, which they paint on paper in coats of glaze. But also the lines of tradition that Auguste Rodin passed on by way of Wilhelm Lehmbruck were taken up by Beuys, such as his interest in the artistic possibilities of the torso." "The complex relation to the work of Auguste Rodin can be followed in the book's comprehensive section showing works by Rodin, Lehmbruck and Beuys."--Jacket

The essential Joseph Beuys by Alain Borer( Book )

2 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 168 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Essential Joseph Beuys was inspired by the idea of an imaginary Beuys exhibition unhampered by the problems connected with actual exhibitions, e.g., those of geography, insurance, fragility, and the concerns of lenders. The book provides a definitive survey of the artist's work in every medium in which he worked - drawings and watercolors, sculptures and objects, environments and actions, and multiples and printed works. Arranged chronologically and covering the four decades he was active (1945-1985), the book reflects the changes in Beuys' choice of register, from the soliloquy of his early days to the dialogue of his period as a teacher to the powerful language of his public lectures to international audiences. In this introductory essay, "A Lament for Joseph Beuys," Alain Borer summarizes the artist's oeuvre, drawing out themes of great complexity and relating them to Beuys' artistic and social milieus
