Birth of Impressionism : masterpieces from the Musée d'Orsay by Guy Cogeval( Book )

1 edition published in 2010 in English and held by 444 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume contains a collection of one hundred works by the masters of nineteenth-century French painting telling the story of the Impressionist movement that changed the way artists view the world and the way the world views art. This book tells the story of the beloved Impressionist movement, focusing on the tumultuous period of the 1860s and 1870s and the emergence of the New Painting out of the Paris Salon. Reproductions of French painting masterpieces from the canvases of Bouguereau to the landscapes and peasant scenes of Millet and Courbet set the stage for a rich visual narrative that recounts the incubation and evolution of the Impressionist movement. The range of subject matter and techniques reflects the stylistic diversity of the artists who were part of this revolution. This work includes paintings by Manet, Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, Cezanne, Morisot, and Degas, among others. The paintings have been selected and thematically grouped to prompt discussion of Impressionism's many facets, including France's turbulent social and political climate at the time, the state-run Salon system and the artistic rivalries it fostered, and aspects of daily life during the Belle Epoque
Renaissance to Rococo : masterpieces from the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art( Book )

12 editions published between 2003 and 2004 in English and held by 434 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"When the Wadsworth Atheneum opened in 1844 as the first public gallery of fine arts in America, the highlights of the collection were works by contemporary American artists. However, gifts soon brought a number of old master paintings to the museum, and today perhaps the most famous aspect of its European collection is the concentration of Italian Baroque masterpieces." "The museum's distinguished director in the 1930s and 1940s, Chick Austin, acquired notable works by Strozzi, Luca Giordano, Claude, and the first authentic Caravaggio in an American museum. Today the Atheneum can present an exhibition beginning with such renaissance masters as Piero di Cosimo and Sebastiano del Piombo, continuing with the finest examples of Baroque painting, and culminating in a blaze of rococo splendor with Tiepolo, Canaletto, Guardi, Melendez, Greuze, and Goya. This catalogue includes a history of the collection by Eric Zafran and entries on the individual paintings by distinguished scholars."--Jacket
Surrealism and modernism : from the collection of the Wadsworth Atheneum by Eric Zafran( Book )

11 editions published between 2003 and 2004 in English and held by 406 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Many of the works - in particular the museum's Surrealist paintings - were bought directly from the artists or from their very first exhibitions. The famed Chick Austin, director of the Atheneum from 1929 to 1944, mounted the first Surrealist exhibition in America in 1931 and proceeded to buy a work by the then relatively little known Salvador Dali. Examples by de Chirco, Cornell, Matta, Calder, and Ernst soon followed. Later, when painters such as Tanguy and his wife, Kay Sage, settled in Connecticut, they became friends with Austin, and works by them and owned by them, such as an admirable painting by Magritte, eventually came to the Atheneum. In 1934 the museum presented the first great American retrospective of Picasso, and Austin was able to buy one small neo-classical example, which over the years has been supplemented by four other Picasso paintings. Austin's successor purchased works by Stanley Spencer, Henry Moore, Maillol, and Marini. In More recent years, examples of American modernists and expressionists such as Georgia O'Keeffe, Arthur Dove, Willem de Kooning, and Jackson Pollock have entered the collection to provide a broad overview of artistic trends of the last century."--Jacket

Calder in Connecticut by Eric Zafran( Book )

5 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 328 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Perhaps the most influential and best loved of all twentieth-century sculptors, Alexander Calder worked primarily in Connecticut after settling in a Roxbury farmhouse in 1933. Connecticut provided a richly stimulating creative environment for him in the critical years when he developed his unique mobiles and stabiles and established his artistic reputation. This intimate and engaging portrait of Calder, at work and at play, offers new insight into how his art was shaped by the state's landscape, his home and studio, his family, and the fascinating circle of artists, writers, curators, and collectors who befriended him. Engaging and authoritative, this visual biography includes many previously unpublished photographs, documents, and reproductions of little-known art works. An account of the home and studio by Alexander S.C. Rower, Calder's grandson, and an affectionate tribute by Calder's neighbor, playwright Arthur Miller, complete the volume, produced in conjunction with a major exhibition at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford."--Publisher's description

"The High Museum is very proud to have organized this exhibition of one of America's few remaining outstanding private collections of drawings. Collectors, both private and institutional, have an almost parental concern for their treasures, and we are therefore especially grateful to Dr. Baer and his family for allowing their collection of master drawings, for which they care so deeply, to be show so widely. We hope the rare opportunity to see such a varied and interesting collection will be both an educational and an enjoyable experience for the viewers and will perhaps inspire some future collectors."
Fifty old master paintings from the Walters Art Gallery by Md.) Walters Art Gallery (Baltimore( Book )

9 editions published between 1987 and 1988 in English and held by 215 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The holdings in the old master painting collection were developed almost entirely by Henry Walters, although they have been supplemented in recent years by superb gifts and excellent, if infrequent, purchases. The core of Renaissance and Baroque paintings came with the purchase in 1902 of 1500 works from Rome's Massarenti collection. This massive acquisition inspired Henry Walters to build the great Renaissance Revival structure whose restoration and return to the public was completed in 1988. - Preface
