The embodied mind : cognitive science and human experience by Francisco J Varela( Book )

72 editions published between 1991 and 2017 in 3 languages and held by 1,068 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Embodied Mind provides a unique, sophisticated treatment of the spontaneous and reflective dimension of human experience. The authors argue that only by having a sense of common ground between mind in Science and mind in experience can our understanding of cognition be more complete. Toward that end, they develop a dialogue between cognitive science and Buddhist meditative psychology and situate it in relation to other traditions such as phenomenology and psychoanalysis
The tree of knowledge : the biological roots of human understanding by Humberto R Maturana( Book )

This text explores 'knowing how we know'. Its authors present a new view of cognition that has important social and ethical implications. They assert that the only world we humans can have is the one we create together through the actions of our coexistence
Ethical know-how : action, wisdom, and cognition by Francisco J Varela( Book )

24 editions published between 1992 and 2004 in 4 languages and held by 589 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book addresses two of the most challenging problems facing contemporary neurobiology and cognitive science: first, understanding how we unconsciously execute habitual actions as a result of neurological and cognitive processes that are not formal actions of conscious judgement but part of a habitual nexus of systematic self-organization; second, creating an ethics adequate to our present awareness that there is no such thing as a transcendental self, a stable subject, or a soul. In summation, the author proposes an ethics founded on "savoir faire" that is a practice of transformation based on a constant recognition of the "virtual" nature of ourselves in the actual operations of our mental lives
Autopoiesis and cognition : the realization of the living by Humberto R Maturana( Book )

23 editions published between 1972 and 1980 in English and held by 518 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

What makes a living system a living system? What kind of biological phenomenon is the phenomenon of cognition? These two questions have been frequently considered, but, in this volume, the authors consider them as concrete biological questions. Their analysis is bold and provocative, for the authors have constructed a systematic theoretical biology which attempts to define living systems not as objects of observation and description, nor even as interacting systems, but as self-contained unities whose only reference is to themselves. The consequence of their investigations and of their living systems as self-making, self-referring autonomous unities, is that they discovered that the two questions have a common answer: living systems are cognitive systems, and living as a process is a process of cognition. The result of their investigations is a completely new perspective of biological (human) phenomena. During the investigations, it was found that a complete linguistic description pertaining to the 'organization of the living' was lacking and, in fact, was hampering the reporting of results. Hence, the authors have coined the word 'autopoiesis' to replace the expression 'circular organization'. Autopoiesis conveys, by itself, the central feature of the organization of the living, which is autonomy
Sleeping, dreaming, and dying : an exploration of consciousness with the Dalai Lama ; foreword by H.H. the Fourteenth Dalai Lama ; narrated and edited by Francisco J. Varela ; with contributions by Jerome Engel, Jr. ... [et al.] ; translations by B. Alan Wallace and Thupten Jinpa by Bstan-ʼdzin-rgya-mtsho( Book )

5 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 373 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book is the account of a historic dialogue between leading Western scientists and one of the foremost representatives of Buddhism today, the Dalai Lama of Tibet. Revolving around the three key moments of consciousness of sleep, dreams, and death - what internationally acclaimed neuroscientist Francisco Varela calls the ego's shadow zones - the conversations recorded here took place at the fourth Mind and Life Conference in Dharamsala, India. With contributions from acclaimed voices such as philosopher Charles Taylor, psychoanalyst Joyce McDougall, psychologist Jayne Gackenbach, cultural ecologist Joan Halifax, and neuroscientist Jerome Engel, the book is both engrossing and highly readable. Whether the topic is lucid dreaming, near death experiences, or the very structure of consciousness itself, the participants in this unique exchange continually surprise and delight us with their discoveries of convergences and divergences between their respective traditions."--Jacket

Understanding origins : contemporary views on the origin of life, mind, and society by Francisco J Varela( Book )

19 editions published between 1991 and 2011 in English and held by 326 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The question of origins is inseparable from a web of hypotheses that both shape and explain us. Although origin invites examination, it always seems to elude our grasp. Notions have always been produced which seek to interpret the genesis of life, mind, and the social order, and these notions have all been found to be unstable in the face of theoretical and empirical challenges. In any given period, the central ideas on origin have had a mutual resonance, frequently overlooked by specialists engaged in their particular fields. The main purpose of this truly interdisciplinary book is the drawing together of contributions from biology, the cognitive sciences and the humanities into a joint exploration of some of the main contemporary notions which deal with the understanding of origins in life, mind and society. The book consists of four central chapters (on social organization, symbols and money, life forms and perception) followed by acute and perceptive discussions. The book arose from an international meeting held at Stanford University

Investigating the brain "from the outside" using brain scanning technology, such as PET and fMRI, bring great precision to results. However, examining the "view from within" the brain isn't so easy. This book presents results of investigations, that examines the conscious mind "from the inside."

17 editions published between 1991 and 1994 in English and held by 246 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

On becoming aware : a pragmatics of experiencing by Natalie Depraz( Book )

21 editions published between 2002 and 2003 in English and Undetermined and held by 193 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book searches for the sources and means for a disciplined practical approach to exploring human experience. The spirit of this book is pragmatic and relies on a Husserlian phenomenology primarily understood as a method of exploring our experience. The authors do not aim at a neo-Kantian a priori 'new theory' of experience but instead they describe a concrete activity: how we examine what we live through, how we become aware of our own mental life."--Jacket

Monte Grande : what is life? With Francisco Varela 1946-2001( Visual )

6 editions published in 2005 in English and Spanish and held by 61 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Francisco Varela was a master of synthesis, admired, controversial, and endowed with the intoxicating passion of an exceptionally gifted researcher. He was highly instrumental in shaping modern systems theory as well as cognitive science. He was a friend of the Dalai Lama and an unorthodox inspirer on the international scientific scene. ... Varela spent his life building bridges: between western science and eastern wisdom, neurobiology and philosophy, abstract theory and practical life. This film succeeds ... in deconstructing the prevailing division between science and art. Bernard Pörksen"--Container
