Collection of manuscripts, photographs, and a sound recording documenting the Washington Conference on American Folk Custom, sponsored by the University of California, Los Angeles and the University of Pennsylvania and hosted by the American Folklife Center, on October 3-5, 1980 in the Assembly Room, James Madison Building, Library of Congress. The conference was co-directed by Wayland D. Hand, Emeritus Professor of German and Folklife at UCLA, who delivered the keynote address with an introduction by Alan Jabbour, on October 4, 1980, which was recorded on audio cassette. Don Yoder, Professor of Folklore and Folklife, University of Pennsylvania was the co-director. Conference sessions included: The Life Cycle and Other Rites of Passage, The Customs of Domestic and Social Life, Occupational and Industrial Folklife, Calendrical Customs, and Customary Law. The collection includes photographs of the event and of speakers including Wayland D. Hand, Don Yoder, Angus Gillespie, Howard Marshall, Byrd Granger, Brian Sutton-Smith, Joseph C. Hickerson, Beverly Stoeltje, Frances Cattermole-Tally, Lynwood Montell, Steve Zeitlin, John Hostetler, Susan Kalcik, Geraldine Johnson, William A. A quilt sharing event is documented in the files of the 1985 festival. Records of the 13 privately-owned quilts that were evaluated consist of questionnaires and color photographs (prints and negatives). The questionnaries, headed "American Textile Registry: Quilt Questionnaire," include separate forms for social history (filled out in advance by the quilt owners) and for technical information (filled out on-site by a consultant). The quilts documented almost all date from between 1840 and 1940, and many of them were created in states other than New Jersey
