Algerien, 1957: In Algier halten die französischen Truppen unter Colonel Mathieu das Heft in der Hand. Nach dem erfolglosen Kampf in Indochina sind die Franzosen fest entschlossen, ihre letzte Kolonie nicht aufzugeben. Doch im Untergrund organisiert die "Nationale Befreiungsfront" (FLN) den blutigen Widerstand. Ihr Ziel ist ein unabhängiger, islamischer Staat Algerien. Ali-la-Pointe entwickelt sich vom Straßengauner zum Attentäter und schließlich zum Chef-Guerillero der Kasbah, dem autonomen historischen Kern Algiers. Zunächst gelten die Anschläge der Aufständischen einzelnen Polizisten und Militärs, bald töten ihre Bomben auch französische und arabische Zivilisten. Die Organisation der Befreiungskämpfer baut auf Anonymität. Keiner von ihnen kennt mehr als zwei seiner Mitstreiter. So scheint es für Colonel Mathieu fast aussichtslos, die Drahtzieher ausfindig zu machen. Als es zum Generalstreik kommt, greift er zu drastischen Mitteln. Seine Soldaten sollen die Gefangenen durch Folter zum Reden bringen. Die Gewalt der einen Seite spiegelt sich so in der Grausamkeit der anderen.
