Die in Shanghai geborene Ruan Lingyu war trotz ihrer kurzen Karriere ein Star in ihrer Heimat. Als "chinesische Garbo" gefeiert, spielte sie zwischen 1927 und 1935 in zahlreichen Stummfilmen die elegante Diva. Ihr facettenreiches und ausdrucksstarkes Spiel wurde bald auch international gewürdigt
