Darunter auch der Schustersohn Nikolaj Kadkin und der deutsche Soldat Müller III., den es als Kriegsgefangenen in Kadkins Provinznest verschlägt. Hier verliebt sich Müller III. in Man'ka, die Tochter des alten Grešin, und bekommt von Kadkins Vater sogar einen Arbeitsplatz, weil "er zwar ein Deutscher, aber schließlich doch eben auch ein Schuster ist".
