Journals of Australian explorations by Augustus Charles Gregory( )

27 editions published between 1884 and 2018 in English and held by 654 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A complete edition of the journals of eight expeditions undertaken by the Gregory brothers in Western, Northern and Central Australia between 1846 and 1861. This was the first comprehensive publication of the Gregory journals, many of which had not been printed before in their entirety. The Gregory brothers played an important role in the history of exploration in Western Australia, and Augustus also led expeditions further afield into unmapped regions of the continent. In 1855, on Governor FitzRoys recommendation, Augustus Gregory was selected by the British Government to lead the North Australian Exploring Expedition. The party of eighteen included his brother Henry as second-in-command, the botanist Ferdinand von Mueller, and the naturalist and artist Thomas Baines. Starting from the mouth of the Victoria River in August 1855, Gregory covered over five thousand miles in his sixteen-month expedition opening up vast areas for pastoral settlement. He was awarded the gold medal of the Royal Geographical Society on his return and is one of the greatest inland Australian explorers. In 1858 Gregory made one further expedition in search of Ludwig Leichhardt and his party, but was forced by drought to abandon the search. This book includes material related to the search. Francis Gregory served his apprenticeship under his brother Augustus in Perth. His exploration with the North West Australian Exploring Expedition of 1861 was to become the basis for later pastoral settlements on the north-west coast

Expedition in search of Dr. Leichhardt (report of proceedings) by Augustus Charles Gregory( Book )

2 editions published in 1858 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Government report printing the field journal of Augustus Charles Gregory, sent in search of Leichhardt in September 1857. Of special interest are the final two pages summarising Gregorys conjectures on Leichhardts ultimate fate, along with good information detailing the geography and Aboriginal tribes of the central deserts. Although Gregory was not succesful in determining the sad fate of Leichhardt and his men, he did unravel uncertainties surrounding inland watercourses (did the Barcoo join Coopers Creek, for example) while finally ending uncertainty about Lake Torrens as a horseshoe shaped entity. The report includes a large folding lithographed map captioned S2Rough Sketch Shewing the Route of the Leichhardt Expedition by A.C. Gregory 1858S3; and an additional leaf printed on both faces printed for parliament on 9 September 1858 (only eight days after the main report here described). The additional leaf is titled Expedition in Search of Dr. Leichhardt (Communication from A.C. Gregory, Esq., upon)
