The essential teachings of Zen Master Hakuin : a translation of the Sokkō-roku Kaien-fusetsu by Hakuin( Book )

12 editions published between 1944 and 2010 in English and held by 215 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A fiery and intensely dynamic Zen teacher and artist, Hakuin (1685-1768) is credited with almost single-handedly revitalizing Japanese Zen after three hundred years of decline. As a teacher, he placed special emphasis on koan practice, inventing many new koans himself, including the famous "What is the sound of one hand clapping'" As an artist, Hakuin used calligraphy and painting to create "visual Dharma"--Teachings that powerfully express the nature of enlightenment. The text translated here offers an excellent introduction to the work of this extraordinary teacher. Hakuin sets forth his vision of authentic Zen teaching and practice, condemning his contemporaries, whom he held responsible for the decline of Zen, and exhorting his students to dedicate themselves to "breaking through the Zen barrier." Included are reproductions of several of Hakuin's finest calligraphies and paintings

Secrets of the Blue Cliff Record : Zen comments by Hakuin and Tenkei by Hakuin( Book )

6 editions published between 2000 and 2002 in English and held by 165 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Blue Cliff Record is a classic text of Zen Buddhism, designed to assist in the activation of dormant human potential. The core of this work is a collection of one hundred traditional citations and stories, selected for their ability to bring about insight and enlightenment. These vignettes are known as gongan in Chinese and koans in Japanese." "Although The Blue Cliff Record has been available in English for many years, authentic traditions of commentary on the text have been unavailable to the public, indeed unavailable even to most specialists in the field - until now. Here is a fresh translation of The Blue Cliff Record featuring newly translated commentary from two of the greatest Zen masters of early modern Japan, Hakuin Ekaku (1685-1768) of the Rinzai sect of Zen and Tenkei Denson (1648-1735) of the Soto sect of Zen. This new translation and commentary on The Blue Cliff Record is sure to shed new light on the meaning of this central Zen text."--Jacket

Poison blossoms from a thicket of thorn by Hakuin( Book )

2 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 141 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Hakuin Enkaku Zenji (1686-1769) was one of the greatest Zen masters to ever live. In additional to being the author of the most famous koan ever written, "What is the sound of one hand clapping?" he is credited with reviving the Rinzai sect of Zen in Japan, perhaps the most important and most rigorous branch in the Golden Age of Buddhism. His "Song of Zazen" is chanted in monasteries daily all over the world. Hakuin taught that there are three essentials to Zen practice: Great Faith, Great Doubt, and Great Resolve. Only Dogen comes close to matching the power and breadth of his writing and teaching. Norman Waddell has spent his life reading and commenting on the vast work of Hakuin. He has published several previous selections, all leading to his work on this major, monumental gathering, the Keiso Dokuzui, never before translated in any foreign language. Translating sacred texts requires years of practice and intimate familiarity with the material in its original language, as well as complete mastery of the available commentary. There's no one alive better capable of handling this important and difficult offering. For this collection Hakuin gathered more than 200 individual pieces, consisting of commentaries, memorials, poems, koans, and teisho (lectures). They were offered to the many students living around his temple as well as to the countless lay followers around the country, and Hakuin spent his life offering these teachings together with his own commentary. Result is an organic, growing collection of understanding and advice, certain to engage Zen students as well as religious practitioners in other spiritual disciplines"--

Complete poison blossoms from a thicket of thorn : the zen records of Hakuin Ekaku by Hakuin( Book )

4 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 91 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The most influential master in the Japanese Rinzai tradition, Hakuin Ekaku (1686-1769) reestablished the rigorous koan-training methods of the great T'an- and Sung-dynasty masters of China; all modern Rinzai Zen masters trace their lineage to him and his teaching. Hakuin took the unusual step of overseeing the collection and publication of his own Zen records--a task usually left to students after the master's death. Complete Poison Blossoms, comprising some 450 individual pieces--the majority in verse, ranging from four-line poems to essays sufficiently long to have been published as independent texts--is a sourcebook of guidance on the path to ultimate liberation. Waddell augments these texts with clarifying introductions and background context, detailed notes explaining Hakuin's allusions, and side remarks recorded during lectures by Hakuin's own students in their copies of the text. Hakuin's teaching is elusive, suggestive, and poetic, a web of mysterious pieces that encourage students to delve into the reality of Buddha-nature and to realize it themselves."--Provided by publisher
