"Der Derwisch und der Tod"Der Derwisch und der Tod" führt in das Bosnien des 18. Jahrhunderts zurück. Der fromme Scheich Ahmed Nurudin wird aus der friedlichen Ruhe des Derwischklosters gerissen; sein Bruder Harun ist von den osmanischen Machthabern, die auch über die Provinz Bosnien gebieten, verhaftet worden. Beim Versuch, seinem Bruder zu helfen, gerät auch der Derwisch in die Fänge der osmanischen Justiz; später wird er an die Spitze einer bosnischen Erhebung gestellt, verrät jedoch, im alten religiösen Ordnungswahn befangen, die Sache der Aufständischen wie schliesslich sogar seinen besten Freund. In drastischen Bildern spiegelt sich die grausame Geschichte einer Region; zugleich aber weitet sich der Roman zu einem grossen Traktat über die Fragen von Macht und Auflehnung, Vertrauen und Verrat, von Leben und Dogma. Der historische Roman des grossen bosnischen Erzählers Mesa Selimovic zählt zu den überragenden epischen Werken der europäischen Literatur. Nach dem Erscheinen der Originalausgabe 1966 übersetzte man den Roman sogleich in viele Sprachen, Mesa Selimovic wurde mehrfach für den Nobelpreis vorgeschlagen. Mesa Selimovic, geboren 1919 in Tuzla im bosnischen Bergland, nahm aktiv am Partisanenkrieg teil; nach dem Krieg lebte er als Philosophieprofessor in Sarajewo. Für den Roman ", der 1971 im Otto Müller Verlag erstmalig in deutscher Sprache erschien, wurde er mehrmals für den Nobelpreis vorgeschlagen. Mesa Selimovic starb 1982 in Belgrad
