The report describes work on cybernetic models for learning and related processes; it provides simulation data and results from comparative studies of learning in man and in the model. Finally, it refers the reader to publications produced as a consequence of this activity. The main topics are: (1) Simulation of evolutionary processes (capable of interpretation in terms of learning in brains or differentiation within a social aggregate). (2) 'Artificial Intelligence' (or 'Cognitive Structure') models combined with a resource assignment programme. (3) The experimental control system used in the comparative studies. (4) Brief account of philosophical issues; in particular, the relation between (1) and (2) above. (5) Brief statement of the relation between a cybernetic learning model and a self organizing system. This scientific note, which was written to accompany Progress Report no. 5, (AD-A050 301) is a detail of an experimental protocol. The picture sequence represents stages in the design of a reaction simulator by two subjects, both of them experts, who were not given specific 'versatility training.' The two subjects worked independently from the same design brief discussed in previous contract reports. Sci. note no. 2 explains the procedure used to obtain these pictures and also to justify it as a general method for quantifying and exteriorizing the design process or many other types of creative activity such as planning and theory building, and including the construction of research hypotheses or 'forecasting.'
Research on the design of adaptive teaching systems with a capability for selecting and altering criteria for adaptation ( Book )
3 editions published between 1962 and 1964 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Topics include: the distribution of control in decision-making groups, interaction between a group of subjects and an adaptive automaton to produce a self-organising system for decision-making, review of experimental procedure, comments on an indeterminacy that characterises a self-organising system, strategies of communication, a simple adaptive teaching machine.
