The Managerial Grid arranges a concern for production on the horizontal axis and a concern for people on the vertical axis of a coordinate system: 1,1 shows minimum concern for production and people; 9,1 shows major production emphasis and minimum human considerations; 1,9 shows maximum concern for friendly working conditions and minimum production emphasis; 5,5 shows adequate production and satisfactory morale; and 9,9 shows major concern for people and production. Most American managers are 5,5, but the ideal, the 9,9 Management, encourages teamwork and mutual respect, learns from mistakes, has a sense of directed commitment, and does not use facades. A study of 716 members of one organization showed that career accomplishment is consistently related to managerial style; the greater a career accomplishment, the more likely that the approach is 9,9 and 9,1. To approach a 9,9 goal, a long term effort should be made with Managerial Grid Laboratory-Seminar training, team development, horizontal and vertical organizational relationships, organizational improvement goals, goal attainment, and stabilization. An experiment now in its fifth year in an industrial plant of 2,400 implemented these suggestions and made considerable tangible and intangible gains. (Extensive references are included.) (Jf)

The premises, methodologies, and applications of synergogy, a new approach to education and training, are discussed. The synergogic approach allows members of small teams to learn from one another through structured interactions. After examining education within the context of human relationships, consideration is given to the way that the authority-obedience model of teaching may impede student learning. Four basic learning designs--structures within which learners teach one another--are examined, along with steps in implementing the designs. Case examples illustrate various applications, including industrial and commercial settings in which the subject is safety education, along with academic applications. Attention is directed to how synergogy can be used to teach factual knowledge, enhance attitudes, and develop skills. The role of the learning administrator (I.E., the person who manages learning situations using synergogic designs) is considered, and synergogy's implications for the future of education, training, and development are addressed. Included are transcripts of interviews with professional users who have applied the designs in business and academic settings. Sample instructional materials, tests, and charts are provided. (Sw)

The use of the "management grid" method of organizational development in college and university administration is described in this adaptation of the 1964 book by the same authors, "The Management Grid." Five major administrative styles are identified: (1) caretaker, (2) comfortable and pleasant, (3) constituency-centered, (4) team, and (5) authority-obedience. Candid examples of typical college administrative practices are provided. The differences in administrative style are determined by the differences in the administrator's concern for institutional performance on the one hand, and concern for people on the other. Based on behavioral research findings, team leadership is recommended as the most effective approach to university management issues, including personnel supervision, teaching and learning support, and budget management.
